Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated Consultant Psychiatrist to join our well established Early Intervention in Psychosis Team in Doncaster.  The successful candidate  will become a leading member of this  multi-disciplinary team providing Consultant input. The Consultant will have a flexible time table designed to respond to the needs of the patients and carers as well as the needs of the team members for support and advice. 

The Trust recently underwent a major restructure into 13 Trust wide Directorates served within 5 Care Groups, with acute and community pathways. This created a multi professional leadership structure which serves the Trust through service matrons, service managers, clinical leaders and care group directors and deputies.

Applicants must be on the GMC Specialist Register for Adult Psychiatry or a trainee within 6 months of completing their CCT and be approved/eligible for approval for Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status. They should have evidence of good communication skills and a commitment to multi-disciplinary and multi-agency working.

There will be opportunities for strategic leadership development by working with the Care Group's Medical Director and  other leads in the development of the Services within the Trust.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties will include:

  • Clinical Leadership to the Early Intervention Team.
  • Discussing patients in the MDT meeting and with keyworkers on an individual basis.
  • Assessing patients with complex mental health issues and first episode psychosis on site, or on home visits.
  • Initiating medication and contributing to patients’ management and treatment plans.
  • Quality improvement of the service – audit and service development projects.
  • Clinical Supervision of the Speciality doctor who is based with the Early Intervention team.
  • Clinical Supervision of the Foundation Year 2 doctor based with the Early Intervention team.
  • Teaching – providing teaching sessions to the Early Intervention team on relevant clinical topic.
  • Teaching junior doctors assigned to the team.
  • Play a leading role in Business/Management Meetings for the team.
  • The post holder will take the medical lead in service development and the implementation of any changes to practice as required in line with evolving evidence and tailored to meet local need.

Essential criteria
  • Medical Qualification

Qualifications

  • Full registration with the GMC and license to practice.
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for Adult Psychiatry or a trainee within six months of completing their CCT.
Desirable criteria
  • MRCPsych or equivalent higher qualification
  • Higher Specialist Training in Adult Psychiatry (e.g. SpR scheme).
  • MD, Management qualification, other professional qualification (e.g. CBT, PSI, CAT).

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of psychiatric practice in a range of settings.
  • Experience of audit and an understanding of the principles of clinical governance
Desirable criteria
  • Prior experience working as a Consultant in Early Intervention Psychiatry.
  • Proven commitment to improving the quality of clinical care.
  • Other special interest/expertise relevant to the post.

Communication skills

Essential criteria
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
  • Have achieved the scores of 7.5 in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application

Other factors

Essential criteria
  • Approved or eligible for approval under section 12(2) MHA 1983.
  • Approved or eligible for Approved Clinician Status.
  • Eligibility to reside and work in the UK.

Special skills and aptitudes

Essential criteria
  • Clinical supervision experience/skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to undertake training/mentoring of medical staff in training grades and enthusiasm for education.
