Consultant Adult Mental Health for CRHT & Care Group Medical Director

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

This is a whole time (10 PA) Consultant Psychiatrist post in the Adult Mental Health Service’s Acute Directorate, with on call duties. The postholder will provide Consultant input to the Crisis Resolution & Home Treatment Team (CRHT) and hold the position of Care Group Medical Director, providing medical leadership.

The CRHT Service receives urgent referrals from GPs, as well as referrals from other professionals, patients, and carers (with patient consent). A crisis response is maintained 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Home Treatment Team operates between 8am & 8pm, 7 days a week. Although not fully integrated, the Team works closely with the Local Authority and Third Sector partners, ensuring the social care needs of people with mental disorders are met.

Other than a dedicated social worker, the Home Treatment Team operates a full MDT approach with medical, nursing, STR, psychology and occupational therapy input. The postholder will provide senior clinical supervision and assessment, and telephone/email advice, as required, to Primary Care physicians for the management of patients with mental health problems in urgent or emergency situations.

During 2025/26 the Acute Directorate will be undergoing a number of environmental and working model changes, which include the creation of a virtual ward model for Older Adults and a Crisis Assessment & Treatment Service. This post will be fundamental to designing, embedding, and delivering services in a different way.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be a collaborative, inclusive, compassionate leader whose values/behaviours inspire understanding, trust, inclusion, and reduce inequalities. They will, in conjunction with the Care Group Nurse Director, contribute to creating a positive safety culture and environment for individual staff, teams, service users, families, and carers to flourish; ensuring exceptional safe care is provided by:
  - continuous learning/improvement of safety risks

 - enabling/empowering speaking up by all

The postholder will lead and manage the Care Group’s medical workforce and (if not already) become a Medical Appraiser within the first year in post. They will work in collaboration with other Clinical Directors and the Care Group’s Senior Leadership Team to support the delivery of a robust, quality Governance Framework, ensuring effective, safe, and high-quality care is provided to service users, their families/carers.

The postholder will contribute to the strategic direction for safe, high-quality services, and develop and deliver key actions in the Trust’s Strategy/other relevant clinical plans.

The postholder is accountable to the Trust’s Deputy Medical Director for the leadership/management of safe medical staffing and caseload oversight, escalating concerns and offering solutions where possible.  They will line manage the Care Group’s:
 - Lead Medics
