Job overview

The Senior ADHD specialist Nurse Practitioner, who is an independent prescriber, will work within the ADHD pathway of the Sheffield Adult Autism and Neurodevelopmental service to provide a specialist clinical assessment and intervention to adults with ADHD and their families.

The post holder will work autonomously taking responsibility for care, quality, and clinical activity. This will include conducting diagnostic assessments, reassessment of needs and initiating ADHD treatment (pharmacological), titrating and optimising treatment. This will also require writing prescriptions for controlled drugs and other medications where appropriate under the supervision of senior clinical staff within their scope of practice.

Main duties of the job

Perform comprehensive assessments of clients/services user’s needs. Plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing health care needs. This would include delivering ADHD specific assessments using a standardized and non standardised ADHD Diagnostic Assessment tools. Use advanced skills and expert knowledge to assess the physical, mental health and social needs of a defined client group, instigating therapeutic care plans and treatments based on the best available evidence to improve health outcomes. Ensure patient information is collated, monitored and fully accurate, maintaining complete and contemporaneous records in line with NMC/ professional bodies and Trust standards. Work within a multi-disciplinary team to ensure effective care plans and treatments are in place for highly complex clients/services users. Communicate highly complex information about clients/services users’ conditions to multi-disciplinary team colleagues, to ensure effective delivery of patient treatments. To provide an Independent Prescriber service in accordance with the clinical setting agreed with the Medics. This will include initiating, titrating, and optimising pharmacological treatment for adult ADHD. To record all interactions and interventions with clients/services users into their medical records.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Promote the involvement and engagement of clients/services users and carer relatives in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care. Work in line with SHPU Non-Medical Prescribing  protocol. To provide advice to clients/service users and carers about safe and effective use of medicines. Lead, co-ordinate, organise and prioritise your own work and the work of the team on a day-to-day basis. Lead and monitor the development of services, new ways of working and the implementation of change. Deputising for Clinical Leads as necessary and appropriate to role. To conduct a risk assessment and take appropriate action when reviewing clients/service users at clinics.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Specialist knowledge of clinical aspects of ADHD
  • Ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team and demonstrate awareness of MDT functioning.
  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills
  • Experience and ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate risk/care plans to meet the needs of clients
  • Ability to manage own workload and determine priorities, including preparing diagnostic reports in a timely manner
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist knowledge of clinical aspects of Autism

Training and Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Registered Mental Health Nurse with live NMC Registration and recorded prescribing qualification. Registered General Nurse considered with relevant experience.
  • Independent Non-Medical Prescriber with clear demonstrable knowledge and skills and extensive previous experience relating to prescribing
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Training in assessment and treatment of ADHD.
Desirable criteria
  • Training in physical health assessments
  • Supervision training and mentor/supervisor qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience to maintain and manage own caseload and work autonomously within the specialist area
  • Experience of assessing and managing risk
  • Experience of liaising with GP’s and managing shared care and ongoing support
  • Experience of assessing, reviewing, and prescribing for ADHD in adults or children.
  • Demonstrating experience in managing ADHD, including the assessment of highly complex and co-morbid cases, with an understanding of issues affecting clients, their families, and caregivers within this client group.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of assessing and reviewing for Autism in adults or children.
