Job overview
STH are committed to promoting and supporting the ever expanding expertise that nursing brings services across our organisation and as such have introduced a Consultant Nurse in Acute Pain to support the operational and strategic vision for our nurse specialist workforce in this area.
The Consultant Nurse will be an expert in Acute Pain management; the individual will bring clinical leadership and provide strategic direction to the Acute Pain Service ensuring that the specialist nursing workforce expands and develops to maximise potential to improve the outcome and experience of patients.
The Consultant Nurse will provide leadership and overall clinical responsibility providing autonomous nurse led services. They will have an active and visible role in the development and delivery of training Acute Pain through evidence-based care, clinical audits and research to ensure maintenance of clinical excellence.
The Consultant Nurse will develop and lead expert nursing practice across the Trust, providing clinical leadership and consultancy to the MDT in both the community and hospital setting. In collaboration with the wider MDT and local networks, they will develop, deliver high quality, patient focussed clinical services in line with national standards for care.

Main duties of the job
- To deliver high quality patient care, acting as a role model for nursing practice across the Acute Pain Service, the Trust and nationally.
- To provide expert clinical nursing advice, education and leadership within the Acute Pain Service.
- To act as a source of expertise, advice and knowledge for patients, carers and healthcare professionals.
- As the senior nurse clinician in the Acute Pain Service, the Consultant Nurse will be responsible for developing and leading nursing and advanced practice and standards. Working with others in the team, the Consultant Nurse will have the authority and freedom to develop and lead advanced nurse practice and research within the departments. They will practice clinically at least 50% of their time.
- In collaboration with the Clinical Director, Clinical Leads and Nurse Director the Consultant Nurse will support the development of clinical strategy for Acute Pain to enable the team to deliver timely, clinical effective patient care that meets national standards.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse (Valid NMC)
- Master's degree in a relevant field/or equivalent/higher post graduate qualification
- Recognised Management Leadership qualification or programme
- To have completed the national practice assessor training or equivalent teaching and assessing qualification for those with ENB998
- Non-Medical Prescriber qualification (NMP)
- APACS - Advanced Physical Assessment and Consultation Skills required for autonomous practitioner
- Post registration qualification / education relevant to Acute Pain
Desirable criteria
- Willingness to undertake PhD/Doctorate qualification
- Advanced communication skill qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial post registration experience in the field of Acute Pain
- Successful completion of core and relevant specialist competencies and relevant portfolio
- Substantial leadership experience at minimum Grade Band 7 or equivalent in Acute Pain
- Evidence of service improvement
- Evidence of participation in research, audit and service evaluation
- Evidence of workforce/practice development and teaching
- Experience of delivering education at a local and national level
- Ability to assess and manage patient risk effectively and safely
- Evidence of a commitment to Evidence Based Practice

- Knowledge of quality, standard setting, benchmarking and audit alongside a working knowledge of clinical governance and its implications
- Knowledge of commissioning processes
- Evidence of applying national policy locally and involvement in strategic initiatives
- Ability to deal with complex and challenging emotional and potentially ethically sensitive situations
- Emotional resilient, ability to deal with conflict
- Understanding of cultural differences and health belief models including diversity in the workplace
- Ability to articulate effectively with advanced written and verbal communication skills and ability to present at local and and national level. Clear, concise written and verbal reporting skills
- Computer literacy in Microsoft packages
- Willing to conduct oneself in accordance with the STH PROUD Values and Behaviours Framework
- Knowledge and understanding of the use of relevant patient information systems and data collection systems
