Job overview
An opportunity has arisen for an Patient Choice Advisor to join to the Single Point of Access Team (SPA). The post will be based at the Northern General Hospital.
The successful candidate will support patients and their carers through the choice of options available to them for a wide range of services, including booking appointments where possible and signposting referrals to the most appropriate community service.
Main duties of the job
Provide the opportunity for patients to choose the appropriate service provider by offering choice. Managing the patient’s referral to the selected care provider, taking ownership to ensure the patients experience is excellent.
To act as a single point of contact for Sheffield Teaching Hospital staff, GP practices and Secondary Care Providers, dealing with enquiries in a sensitive, confidential, effective and timely manner.
To effectively manage the booking of clinic appointments for patients, offering a choice of location, date, time ensuring we meet the patient’s needs to achieve a positive outcome for each patient.
To administer the booking of appointments on SystmOne and Connect. Generate appointment letters and patient information to confirm time and date agreed and to reschedule appointments if necessary.
To work within an environment that receives and makes a high volume of inbound and outbound calls on behalf of the services currently managed via the SPA. These services include – Therapy Services, continence, District Nurses, Phlebotomy, Long Term Conditions, heart failure, Active Recovery, COPD, Hospital at Home and Urgent Community Response
Undertake general administration duties including post, registration of all referrals, data collection, accurate and timely data entry, word processing and inputting information on SystmOne and Connect and being able to prioritise and organise own workload.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Educated to GCSE level or equivalent (A-C/4-9 in English & Maths) or equivalent experience
- NVQ level 3 in Business Administration/Customer Care or equivalent qualification.
Desirable criteria
- OCR Word Processing Level II or equivalent
- ECDL or equivalent

- General knowledge of the NHS
Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive and relevant experience in administration duties, either in NHS or similar organisation
- Excellent Patient/Customer care skills
- Effective communications skills both written and verbal
- Experience of dealing with a high volume of telephone enquiries
- Experience in the use of data and/or databases.
Desirable criteria
- An understanding of basic medical terminology, anatomical and clinical terms.
