Job overview
We are looking to appoint to a whole-time Locum Consultant Anaesthetist post with the opportunity for additional training time in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, based at the Northern General Hospital. The appointment is to commence as soon as possible for a fixed term period of 12 months.
Applicants should be on the specialist register in Anaesthesia or be eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview. Applicants should have experience in cardiac intensive care, thoracic and cardiac anaesthesia and be looking to build on this experience prior to taking up a substantive consultant post.
Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.
We would welcome applications from candidates across the full spectrum of experience, from those who have recently completed training to those who have well-established careers.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will, together with consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of anaesthetic services to the Trust.
The post will allow the development and enhancement of existing clinical skills and allow the acquisition of further skills relevant to cardiothoracic anaesthesia. As a large tertiary referral unit there will be many training opportunities to take advantage of.
The post will provide a real opportunity for the post holder to develop their curriculum vitae in preparation for a substantive consultant post. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to be involved in service review and development and to teach trainee anaesthetists and allied health professionals. The post will allow an audit of current and developing clinical practice in conjunction with existing departmental audit programmes.
Given that a focus of the post is to gain experience in TOE one of the duties of the post will be to organise a echocardiography and/or CPD meeting. The appointee will need to coordinate case presentations and discussions, inviting presenters from throughout the trust and encouraging co-operative learning throughout the anaesthetic, critical care, and cardiology groups.
Working for our organisation

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts. This is an exceptional opportunity to join an award winning and internationally recognised team, with a focus on innovation, research and high quality care, as well as family friendly working, and we are keen to discuss with individuals about how we can support their ambitions.
