Job overview
To work as part of the clinical team to ensure a clean, safe and comfortable environment is maintained. To work closely with the Matron and Sister/Charge Nurse in supporting the nursing staff in providing a high standard of care by performing duties as per attached job description.
Main duties of the job
Assist in monitoring and maintaining cleaning standards on the ward and report to the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse and Matron on the level of cleanliness in the area.
Participate in environmental monitoring and inspections.
Spot cleaning i.e. ensure spillage’s including body fluids are dealt with swiftly and efficiently in accordance with Trust policies.
By working with and following guidance from the nursing team, ensure equipment (both clinical and non-clinical) is in a clean condition and available for immediate use.
Upkeep of ward appearance i.e. removing clutter, tidy notice boards, attend to storage requirements, signage, tidy nurse stations etc.
Ensure bed areas are clean and prepared for new patients.
Care of patients lockers and bed areas.
Assist patients with meal choices as directed by the Nurse in Charge.
Assist with the setting of tables, serving of meals, cleaning crockery, replenishing water jugs.
Assisting patients with dietary and fluid intake, as directed by the Nurse in Charge and document this on the patients diet and fluid charts in accordance with the care plan.
Replenish and tidy the following areas: bathrooms; dirty and clean utility rooms; storerooms; nurse servers and stations.
Check and report faulty equipment, including beds, bed lights and patient handsets ensuring all defects are logged using the appropriate fault reporting process.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GCSE Grade D/3 or above in English or Maths or equivalent qualifications or equivalent experience.
- Valid Basic Food Hygiene Certificate or attainment of Basic REHIS Elementary Food Hygiene Certificate (can be completed once in post – one day course)
Desirable criteria
- Clerical / IT qualification or relevant experience
- Working towards Regulated Qualification Framework (RQF) level 2 or 3 (NVQ2/3)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Manual Handling, Fire and Health and Safety Awareness (can be completed once in post ent.
- Demonstrable ability to use a computer
- Familiar with Microsoft packages and information systems
- Experience of working in a customer service environment
Desirable criteria
- Experience in a caring or hotel/catering environment
- Experience of working at a supervisory level
Special Skills/Aptitudes
Essential criteria
- Ability to communication well within a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to deal with any potentially difficult or sensitive issues
