Job overview
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Sheffield Clinical Research Facility (CRF) is a joint venture between the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The CRF supports a wide and increasing portfolio of studies across a breadth of clinical specialities. It provides an excellent environment to develop research skills and provides an education and development programme for clinical researchers. The CRF is a service delivery engine and works collaboratively across the organisation to provide researchers with a cross-city unit dedicated to delivering research for the benefit of patients. The CRF has been awarded an NIHR grant to further develop Experimental Medicine in South Yorkshire.
Maintaining up to date systems and processes to support staff, patients and researchers is essential to ensure research carried out in the CRF is delivered to the highest possible standard, adhering to Research Governance and the Regulatory Framework. The CRF is based across the two main acute sites of the Trust, the Royal Hallamshire Hospital (RHH) and the Northern General Hospital (NGH). Both sites provide access to highly skilled research nurses, clinical and administrative support staff who are specially trained to help researchers deliver their research within the specified study timelines and targets. CRF staff work across all sites of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Main duties of the job
To work as a member of the Clinical Research Facility team to assist in the delivery of quality care and service to research participants and researchers within a dedicated research setting.
Carry out assigned and delegated tasks as part of clinical team under the direction of registered nurses and undertake some aspects of care without direct supervision.
Maintain clinical skills and competencies of identified clinical skills including ECG recording, venepuncture, cannulation.
Ensure trial specimens are processed and managed, stored and dispatched in accordance with Human Tissue Act 2004 and all Study Specific Laboratory Manuals.
Take additional responsibility for study data entry onto both electronic and paper records ensuring accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.
All study related activity must be completed to ICH Good Clinical Practice.
Understand own level of responsibility, scope of practice and accountability and always act within own capabilities and role.
Follow all STHFT policies and provide a safe environment for treatment of patients.
Participate in personal and practice development activities to maintain standards of care.
Display a positive attitude towards staff, patients, and relatives at all times, in line with STHFT's PROUD values.
Participate in 7 day working rosters, and on call rota for evening /weekend where criteria apply.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for a period of 12 months due to the post being externally funded. The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts taking into consideration the ongoing source of the external funding and the requirement for the post to be maintained.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GCSE English and Maths at grade D / 3 or above (or relevant equivalent qualification or level of ability which would include Functional Skills Level 1)
- Completion of the STH 5-day Healthcare Support Worker Programme within the 12 months prior to employment or an equivalent Care Certificate from an approved awarder.
- Level 3 Apprenticeship (or equivalent qualification) in Health Care / health related subject OR successful completion of / willingness to complete the Trust’s required Clinical Support Worker training and competency package.
