Job overview

We are currently looking to appoint to an Endoscopy Academy Senior Clinical Fellow post in the Gastroenterology team. The appointment is for a period of 12 months, commencing 6th August 2025. The post does not award a National Training Number.  As this post is not recognised as a ‘training post’, full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise is required, and if the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required.

Main duties of the job

1.       Supervise, monitor and assist the CMT and foundation trainees (F1 and F2) in the day-to-day management of patients.

2.       Liaise between nurses, other junior doctors, patients, relatives, and senior medical staff.

3.       Attend and participate in ward rounds, outpatient clinics as timetabled.

4.       Take part in rostered emergency medical work (GIM rota based NGH and/or RHH).

5.       Take part in SpR speciality rota for inpatient reviews.

6.       Maintain continued professional development.

7.       Attend weekly educational and multidisciplinary sessions.

8.       Undertake audit (as appropriate).

9.       Teach student doctors as directed.

10.   Attend appropriate induction in each hospital and new department.

11.   Undertake all necessary mandatory training.

12.   Comply with all local policies including dress code, annual and study leave.

Working for our organisation

The Northern General Hospital is the home of the City’s Accident and Emergency department which is also now one of three adult Major Trauma Centres for the Yorkshire and Humber region. A number of specialist medical and surgical services are also located at the Northern General Hospital including cardiac, orthopaedics, burns, plastic surgery, spinal injuries and renal to name a few.

A state-of-the-art laboratories complex provides leading edge diagnostic services. The hospital also provides a wide range of specialist surgery such as orthopaedic, spinal cord, hand and kidney transplantation.

The Royal Hallamshire Hospital has a dedicated neurosciences department including an intensive care unit for patients with head injuries, neurological conditions such as stroke and for patients that have undergone neurosurgery. It also has a gastroenterology department, a large tropical medicine and infectious diseases unit as well as a specialist haematology centre and other medical and surgical services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical duties will include ward-based working gaining experience in both luminal and hepatology firms with supervised outpatient clinics and a regular  endoscopy training list (gastroscopy or colonoscopy) per week if appropriate. Participation in the GIM on call rota and the opportunity to participate during daylight hours in a speciality gastroenterology SpR rota for inpatients speciality reviews of patients under diverse teams with consultant support. The Royal Hallamshire and Northern General Consultants will supervise this clinical service.  Some sessions may be flexibly worked depending on space limitations in the outpatient and endoscopy departments.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered with the GMC with a licence to practise
  • ALS
  • Basic Medical Degree
  • Full Membership of the Royal College of Physicians

Clinical experience

Essential criteria
  • Successful completion of foundation years training (or equivalent)
  • Successful completion of internal medicine training programme IMT1 & 2 (or equivalent)
  • 6 Months experience of working in the NHS
  • Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need
  • Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk
  • Recognition of, and ability to undertake the initial management of, an acutely ill patient
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in Gastroenterology

Teaching and training

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching medical students and junior doctors
Desirable criteria
  • To have the ability and willingness to teach at all levels and to all groups of staff

Continuous Professional Development

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months
