Job overview

As a Clinical specialist physiotherapist you will be accountable for ensuring the provision of high-quality therapy care across relevant clinical pathways within Acute Therapy Services. Deliver expert-level clinical practice, utilizing advanced clinical reasoning to support effective patient care and provide guidance and mentorship to therapy staff.  You will lead the ongoing evaluation and development of clinical practice within the specialist area, ensuring alignment with current national and local policies, guidelines, and professional frameworks. Contribute to the development of evidence-based practice through clinical audit, effectiveness reviews, and research activities, while supporting the wider team in embedding outcomes into service improvement. Collaborate with Clinical Service Managers and Lead Therapists to drive the modernization and continuous improvement of Therapy Services, promoting innovation and service excellence.

Main duties of the job

You will manage a complex caseload requiring advanced clinical reasoning and specialist intervention. Responsibilities include supporting recruitment processes, conducting appraisals, addressing performance issues, and contributing to service integration and development across occupational therapy and physiotherapy. The role also involves leading clinical networks, developing care pathways, overseeing risk assessments and clinical protocols, and supporting operational leadership. You will be expected to maintain up-to-date specialist knowledge and applying evidence-based practice are integral to delivering high standards of patient care.

Key duties

Manage complex clinical caseloads requiring advanced reasoning and specialist therapy.
Supervise, train, and delegate tasks to junior staff and assistants to ensure safe and competent practice.
Support recruitment and act as Appointing Officer for the team.
Monitor and appraise clinical performance; address competence or capability issues.
Communicate professionally to resolve complex issues and support staff development.
Contribute to the integration of services and leadership within the specialty.
Conduct risk assessments, develop protocols, and contribute to safe systems of work.
Assist operational leads with service management responsibilities.
Maintain and apply current specialist knowledge and best practice evidence.

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience as a qualified therapist
  • Significant experience at Specialist level in relevant specialty
  • Clinical Educator
  • Participation in Clinical Audit & Practice Development
  • Supervision and line management of Therapy staff including appraisal
  • Professional Presentations
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of the pathways and role of acute therapy within the wider system.
  • Post-registration NHS experience as a Physiotherapist
  • Demonstrates the ability to deliver high level decision making regarding rehabilitation and discharges.

Qualifications and Education

Essential criteria
  • BSc in Physiotherapy
  • Current HPC Registration
  • Postgraduate Masters level module in relevant subject to this post or equivalent relevant knowledge and skills accumulated through formal training and experiential learning
  • Current documented evidence of continuous personal & professional development, relevant to the current post
  • Current advanced clinical knowledge and skill in specialty
  • Current knowledge of evidence-base for specialty
  • Good basic knowledge of therapy practice for management of frailty, deconditioning, secondary prevention related to speciality and health coaching approaches
Desirable criteria
  • Master’s degree in relevant Speciality
