Job overview
The appointment is to commence 6th August 2025 for a fixed term period of 6 months, working in the department of Microbiology at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH) based in laboratory medicine at the Northern General Hospital. The candidate will be expected to have MRCP and have an interest in pursuing a career in infection medicine.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered with the GMC with a licence to practise
- Basic Medical Degree
- MRCP
- Have evidence of achievement of core medical capabilities
Desirable criteria
- Higher degrees including MSc, PhD, or MD (not including intercalated BSc or ‘Honorary’ MA)
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of experience in a range of acute medical specialties, with experience of managing patients on unselected medical take during core training or equivalent
- NHS Experience
- Demonstrates awareness of the basics of managing patients with infection, including awareness of relevant medical microbiology and virology laboratory techniques
- Demonstrates awareness of managing acute medical conditions, including emergencies, in patients and outpatients
- Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems.
- Able to work without direct supervision where appropriate.
- Able to prioritise clinical need.
- Able to maximise safety and minimise risk
Desirable criteria
- Experience at core level of managing patients with infectious disease.
- Experience of laboratory work (including research) relevant to infection
- Experience of managing patients with severe acute medical disease.
Teaching and Training
Essential criteria
- Experience of teaching medical students and junior doctors
CPD
Essential criteria
- Evidence of participation in CPD / CME in the last 12 months
Desirable criteria
- Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio
Personal Attributes
Essential criteria
- Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values
- Good oral and written communication skills
Research
Essential criteria
- Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate
- Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
- Evidence of involvement in a quality improvement or formal research project
- Demonstrates knowledge of evidence informed practice
Desirable criteria
- Publications in Peer reviewed journals.
