Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our busy labour ward team at Jessops, as a maternity care assistant (MCA).
The primary role of the MCA is to assist, support and work in collaboration with the midwife and the wider multidisciplinary team; to provide a safe and holistic approach to women centred care with the provision of care to women, their babies and families.
The MCA with undertake a range of activities and is responsible for contributing to the smooth running of the maternity unit utilising and upholding PROUD values.

Main duties of the job
Cleaning rooms.
Cleaning breastfeeding equipment.
Assist in the delivery of care to women and their babies under the direction of a Registered Midwife/Nurse or MSW including personal hygiene needs, ensuring diet and fluids are given when required, assistance to the toilet, ensure women are comfortable, safeguard the well-being and health of women and babies in their care reporting concerns promptly.
Report any faults within the environments to estates.
Escort women or babies to other departments when necessary.
Removal of cannulas and safe disposal.
Assisting with the application of thrombo embolus stockings.
Printing of patient labels and wristbands.
Ensuring the unit is kept stocked and tidy.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Commitment to, and successful completion of the Care Certificate from an approved awarder, or commitment to successful completion the Care Certificate within 12 weeks from start of employment
- Commitment to, and successful completion of a maternity specific inhouse training day to cover required competencies
- GCSE English and Maths at grade D/3 or above (or relevant equivalent qualification or level of ability which would include Functional Skills Level 1)
Desirable criteria
- Level 2 Apprenticeship (or equivalent) in Health Care / health related subject or equivalent experience
Experience
Desirable criteria
- Experience of multi-professional and team working
- Experience of working in a Health Care environment or experience as a carer
Skills & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Demonstrates insight / understanding into the role applied for in delivering care to meet patient needs
- Understands the importance of confidentiality and demonstrates a knowledge of how it can be maintained
- Ability to communicate effectively with both patients and colleagues, including the ability to discuss sensitive issues, demonstrating tact and empathy
- Able to follow verbal and written instructions in order to complete assigned tasks.
- Able to undertake frequent periods of physical activity e.g., moving and assisting patients as required with mechanical aids
- Ability to problem solve, using initiative and own judgement to resolve routine issues
Desirable criteria
- IT literate and comfortable / confident with the use of computer systems
