Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7, Safeguarding Lead Midwife to join the Jessop Wing, Safeguarding Team at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. We are looking to recruit an inspirational and highly motivated Midwife with enhanced leadership abilities.

The successful candidate will demonstrate extensive Safeguarding knowledge and possess expertise within the remit of Maternity and desirably Neonatal services. A Think Family approach is essential.

The post holder will report to and support the Named Midwife for Safeguarding at Jessop Wing and act as a conduit between staff and external agencies and stakeholders involved in Safeguarding Children and Child Protection.

The Safeguarding Lead Midwife will be a visible and credible leader within the Jessop Wing, sharing specialist knowledge, and advice to staff in the clinical environment.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is the Specialist Safeguarding Midwife based Jessop Wing Hospital.

The post holder will be supported by a team of midwives who provide enhanced midwifery.

Care to vulnerable families to ensure safety and compassion during their pregnancy journey.

The Specialist Midwife for Safeguarding will support all activities necessary in maternity.
services to ensure that the organisation meets its responsibilities to safeguard and protect children and young people.

The Midwife will identify and co-ordinate the provision of multidisciplinary care for socially vulnerable women through support, advice and training for staff dealing with complex child protection issues. 

The post holder will provide high quality, effective midwifery care that is evidence based and woman centred.

Support midwives to provide coordinated care for vulnerable women and those with complex social needs.

Provide direct support, clinical supervision and line management for the community vulnerable women’s midwives.

Ensure information and advice is culturally sensitive and tailored to meet the needs of the local populations including those that are digitally excluded, none-English speaking or visual or auditory impairment.

The Directorate of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Neonatology is based at the Jessop Wing which is linked to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The maternity unit has over 6800 births per year and is a Regional Tertiary Maternity Service with a Level 3 Neonatal Unit of 44 cots. A tertiary Gynae-Oncology service and a changing Gynaecology Service, which includes an Assisted Conception Unit, complete the services within the Directorate.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC registered Midwife educated to degree level or higher
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Safeguarding Children Level 3 Training
  • Evidence of completion of a Safeguarding Supervision Course (or willing to work towards)
Desirable criteria
  • Safeguarding Training at Degree/Masters Level

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant safeguarding experience in an acute or community setting
  • Previous child protection, child in need and multi-agency working experience
  • Effective working knowledge of local Safeguarding policies and process
  • Experience in delivering safeguarding training/MDT education
  • Ability to undertake audit and service evaluation

Skills and Knowledge
