Job overview

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is looking to appoint a Locum Appointment for Service (LAS) in Palliative Medicine.  This is a 0.8 WTE part time position for a fixed term period from 1 June 2026 to 23 November 2026.

The duties of this post are equivalent to ST3 level training.  The appointment will be at Nodal Point 04.

A basic medical degree (MBChB), valid Advanced Life Support certificate and successful completion of foundation years’ and core training by the date of application are essential. Experience of working in the NHS as a doctor in a substantive post is essential.  It is essential that applicants can demonstrate the ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems and prioritise clinical need.  Applicants will also have the ability to recognise and undertake the clinical management of an acutely ill patient.

The post does not award a National Training Number, as this post is not recognised as a ‘training post’. Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise by the date of application is required.  If the appointee does not hold right of residence in the UK sponsorship will be required.

Main duties of the job

The candidate will join the service providing a ward-based consultation service, outpatient- clinics and in-patient palliative care. The candidate will also be expected to attend clinical multi-disciplinary team meetings and participate in the teaching and audit programme.

Outside working hours the candidate will take part in an on-call rota including:.

  • Routine review of patients under the care of their own clinical base appropriate to the needs of individual patients and care regimes.
  • Registrar level medical cover for all clinical units and services participating in the  South Yorkshire Programme For Higher Specialist Training  in Palliative Medicine.
  • Specialist Palliative Medical Cover for advice, consultations and emergency admissions for primary and secondary care services who refer to clinical units and services participating in the programme.
  • Advice to general practitioners, junior medical staff and clinical nurse specialists concerning patients under their care, attending the patient out- of-hours if necessary.
  • Liaison with primary and secondary care services to facilitate the provision of emergency and out-of-hours therapy or services for patients in need.

Working for our organisation

The Northern General Hospital has 1,200 beds and an accident and emergency department.  The hospital provides orthopaedic, colorectal, plastic and cardiothoracic surgery for the city.  There is a large department for the care of the elderly and rehabilitation including a stroke unit.  Regional centres for renal medicine and spinal injuries are also on site.

The Sheffield Macmillan Palliative Care Unit opened in May 2002, providing 18 beds in a separate purpose built unit within the Northern General site.  Medical staff include two consultants, StR, Advanced Clinical practitioner, and junior medical staff.
