We are looking for enthusiastic and innovative individuals to join our expanding pharmacy team. Being one of the biggest pharmacy departments in the country, the team at Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust comprises of approximately 500 pharmacy staff working across five sites.

This advert is an opportunity to apply for either Dispensary based Technician posts or Medicines Management Technician posts within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. 

Applicants must have a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in The Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians or equivalent qualification and be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council. However, students who qualify this summer may apply and will commence at Agenda for Change Band 3 until the registration process is complete.

 

Main duties of the job

In either role you will be part of a progressive pharmacy team providing a vital service to our patients here at STH. Each role is varied day to day providing medication for inpatients, outpatients and discharge medications along with patient counselling and working with specialised teams and treatments. 

As this is a progression role you will initially start as a band 4 technician (dependent on experience) and work towards band 5 undertaking competencies and developing your skills along the pathway. Full training and mentorship will be provided in each role and as a department we offer support and continued professional development opportunities throughout your career.

Should you already meet the band 5 criteria you will be appointed to this.

Please note this post is at AFC band 4, progressing to a band 5 position upon successful completion of competencies and Accredited Checking Technician qualification.  Should you already meet the band 5 criteria you will be appointed to this on a permanent contract.

A learner/applicant must be a UK, EEA, or EU resident for at least the past three years to undertake an apprenticeship training programme.

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma in The Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians or equivalent qualification (Band 4 and 5)
  • GPhC registered Pharmacy Technician (Band 4 and 5)
  • Evidence of continuous professional development (Band 4 and 5)
  • Microsoft Office Packages – evidence of short courses or relevant experience (Band 4 and 5)
  • Must be willing to undertake an accredited checking qualification (Band 4)
  • Accredited Checking qualification (Band 5)
  • Evidence of relevant professional learning and development, preferably to undergraduate level/ or willing to work towards (Band 5)
  • Must be willing to obtain Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (Band 4 and 5)
  • NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills or equivalent (band 4 and 5)
  • Whilst training at band 4 must participate in appropriate competencies and training (Band 4)
  • Band 4 to 5 training expected to be completed within 18 months to progress to band 5 (band 4)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of Labelling and Dispensing (Band 4 & 5)
  • Successful completion of the Band 4 -5 Development Pathway or equivalent experience (Band 5)
  • Supervisory experience or willing to undertake a range of short courses in HR and management. (Band 5)
  • Experience of using pharmacy-based computer systems (Band 4 & 5)
  • Experience of working as part of a team (Band 4 & 5)
  • Excellent customer service skills demonstrable from previous experience working within pharmacy. (Band 4 & 5)
  • Ability to demonstrate low dispensing process error rates (Band 5)
  • Staff development/training experience (Band 5)
  • Successful completion of a competency training package including: Labelling and dispensing of prescriptions (band 4 and 5)
Desirable criteria
  • Supervisory experience or willing to undertake a range of short courses in HR and management. (Band 4)
  • Ability to demonstrate low dispensing process error rates (Band 4)
  • Experience of working with automated dispensing systems (Band 4 & 5)
  • Experience of working at ward level as a medicines management technician (band 5)
