An exciting opportunity has arisen for a committed Mortuary Entry Level Technologist to join our hard working and friendly team. Applications from those who are currently working towards completion of RSPH Level 3 certificate are also welcome.
The successful candidate will enrol and full participate in the Level 3 Anatomical Pathology Technologist course and undertake training to carry out Mortuary and Post-mortem duties under supervision.
The SYB Histopathology department provides a complete analytical and diagnostic Histopathology service across the SYB region. Mortuary services lie within the histopathology specialty and provide comprehensive care to patients who pass away within the hospital and / or community setting. Whilst this role has a base location, flexibility is required to cover other sites as and when needed.

Main duties of the job
- Enrol and fully participate in the level 3 Anatomical Pathology Technologist course. Undertake course work on time and complete all evidence required for portfolio completion.
- Undertake training to perform routine and complex post-mortem procedures, including evisceration, dissection, and body reconstruction, following strict health and safety protocols under supervision
- To work as part of a team providing a highly specialized clinical and technical paediatric and/or adult post-mortem service.
- To assist the APT, Senior APT and pathologist in the diagnosis of the cause of death for SYBP cases and external referrals for coroner and hospital requested post-mortems
- To provide advice and support to bereaved relatives and medical staff.
- To undertake training in order to carry out routine mortuary and post-mortem duties under supervision in the mortuaries and post-mortem suites on any of our sites as directed by senior staff.
- To ensure that all statutory obligations are met regarding the management of deceased individuals.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Working towards Certificate in Anatomical Pathology technology or Level 3 Anatomical Pathology technology
- GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English at level C/4 or above
- Commitment to undertake all on the job training
- Evidence of relevant CPD
- Level 3 qualification e.g. Certificate in Anatomical Pathology technology or Level 3 Anatomical Pathology technology, NVQ, 2 A-Levels (eg Biology, Anatomy), Apprenticeship or equivalent working experience in mortuary or funeral directors.
Desirable criteria
- Registration with AAPT (Association of Anatomical Pathology Technology)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Relevant experience of working within a hospital or public mortuary, including, hazardous implants removal understanding medical information, training.
- Experience with a range of Mortuary techniques
- Awareness or willingness to develop knowledge and competency of dissection and reconstruction, including suturing, evisceration of organs, scalpel use, suturing for facial reconstruction/corneal retrieval, enucleation
- Awareness or willingness to develop knowledge and competency of organ retention, post mortem issues, consent form issues, inc sensitive disposal of organs
- Awareness of advanced autopsy, forensic, and infection procedures.
Desirable criteria
- Awareness of sample taking and distribution
- Previous NHS experience
Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Keyboard and IT skills with basic understanding of MS Word, Excel and Access
- Have an awareness of Health & Safety issues
- Effective Communication skills, written and oral
- Evidence of effective time management skills and with a methodical approach
Desirable criteria
- In depth understanding of Word, Excel, power point and access.

- Ability to plan and prioritise allocated work
