Job overview
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOT A TRAINING POST.
Our department is accredited with Quality Standard for Imaging (QSI) demonstrating our commitment to providing a high-quality service. The sonographer team undertakes a wide variety of examinations including abdominal, gynaecology, obstetrics, vascular, MSK and head & neck across three departments. Each specialism is led by a Specialist Advanced Practitioner Sonographer some of whom also perform interventional procedures.
You would be required to provide a high quality ultrasound service within your area of clinical competence working within the department protocols, seeking advice as and when necessary from Sonographer Clinical Leads and Consultant Radiologists. You will be accountable for your own professional actions.
With our recent appointment of a Consultant Sonographer, we now have a service which encompasses all levels of practice and roles outlined in the Sonographer Career Framework. Our vision is to further shape and develop our workforce providing increased opportunities for sonographers wanting to progress clinically and professionally for the benefit of our patients.
Main duties of the job
Undertake examinations in ultrasound, using established directorate and departmental guidelines, policies and procedures.
Select imaging modalities and techniques appropriate to the needs of the patient.
Compile a personal and professional portfolio in conjunction with the PDR process and undertake reflective practice.
Utilise the department CRIS and PACS system so as to maintain the electronic management of a patient throughout their time in the department and enter required data as specified in the department policy.
Have knowledge about and participate in the departmental Quality Assurance Programme and be involved in future developments.
Monitor the quality of own work and that of others in own area and alert manager to quality issues.
Be involved in the development and review of policies, protocols and guidelines in each designated area by cascading up-to-date knowledge learnt through the relevant professional bodies.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSc in Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent healthcare professional qualification.
- Pg Dip Medical Ultrasound from a CASE accredited course OR applications will be considered with Pg Cert Medical Ultrasound if alongside extensive post qualification experience relevant to the service. Qualifications must be from a CASE accredited ultrasound course or equivalent (via UK ENIC as required).
- HCPC registration (or equivalent AHP regulated register), or relevant PSA accredited voluntary registration e.g. RCT.
- Evidence of actively maintaining a CPD portfolio.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience in Medical Imaging or equivalent health profession practice.

- Post-qualified competency and ultrasound experience performing routine and urgent ultrasound examinations independently. (Newly qualified sonographers will be considered)

- Demonstrate an ability to independently scan and produce clinical reports and / or complete department report proformas in accordance with department guidelines and protocols.
- Knowledge of the role of the sonographer within NHS services and patient pathway.
- Ability to work within the professional, clinical and governance frameworks within the Trust.
- Ability to work under pressure in an unpredictable work environment, maintaining a calm and a professional demeanour.
- Able to cope with stressful, distressing and emotional circumstances.
- Awareness of sonographer related work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) – and how to limit risks.

- Flexibility to work within all STH sites including bespoke regional training commitments across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw ICB during Pg Dip Medical Ultrasound.
- Commitment to undertake ALL training requirements of the post and progress as service need requires
- A commitment to expand and develop their core knowledge using evidence-based practice and to work alongside other medical professionals to enhance their understanding of patient pathways.
- Ability to work flexible hours to meets the needs of the 7-day service.
- Ability to deal with competing priorities and to organise self and team members to deliver outputs to multiple deadlines.
- Demonstrate drive and resilience.
- Effective communicator with both staff and patient.
