Job overview

We are looking for an experienced, highly motivated and enthusiastic Applied Psychologist or Accredited Psychological Therapist to provide 12 months’ maternity cover, working as part of our Health and Justice Services in Midlands Partnership University Foundation NHS Trust, in partnership with the Probation Service.

Please note that applications are welcome from either Qualified and HCPC Registered Psychologist or Qualified and accredited Psychological Therapist, Sociotherapist or equivalent (IGA, UKCP or equivalent).

The Approved Premises at Kirk Lodge is a highly specialised service in the OPD Pathway, supporting men on licence upon release from custody with the transition to community living.

The PIPE model is well established, and Kirk Lodge has accreditation as an Enabling Environment. You will be joining a team that includes a Senior Probation Officer (Operational Lead), Specialist Probation Practitioner, and Assistant Psychologist. We can offer you a strong commitment to supervision and appraisals to support your CPD whilst you are in post.

You will be joining an established and friendly group of MPFT OPD Clinical Leads, for whom clinical supervision, peer support and continuing professional development are an integral part of clinical practice.

The post holder will be offered a robust support package of support, clinical supervision, and training opportunities within the NHS Trust and by the national OPD Pathway team.

Main duties of the job

Working in partnership with the Operational Lead, you will be responsible for providing clinical leadership for Kirk Lodge PIPE AP, leading on all aspects of PIPE service delivery including staff training and development, coordination and provision of structured sessions for service users and implementation of high-quality clinical supervision for Probation staff.

You will ensure high quality performance data is available to service commissioners according to established protocols. You will also need to liaise effectively with Senior Probation Officers who hold operational responsibility for this important area of Probation Service delivery.

The Assistant Psychologist who will be supported and/or supervised by the Clinical Lead depending on qualifications.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.    To manage the implementation and delivery of the PIPE model in line with the PIPE service specification and national guidance; developing operational structures and approaches that are appropriately psychologically and psychosocially informed.
2.    Deliver or enable case consultations and discussions that ensure Approved Premises staff understand an individual’s behaviour, presentation and problems within a psychologically- or psychotherapeutically informed framework.  
3.    To contribute to risk assessment and risk management plans for relevant individual service users, as required.
4.    To promote a developed and applied understanding of Personality Disorder and related topics within the staff group at Kirk Lodge, in order to develop a healthy psychosocial environment and to enable the staff to carry out the requirements of the PIPE operating model effectively.
5.    When required, to exercise delegated responsibility for managing the MPFT resources available to the PIPE service, both in terms of MPFT staff and any clinical materials employed in the assessment and treatment of service users.

Person specification

Qualifications & Training

Essential criteria
  • Post-graduate doctoral level qualification in applied psychology (or its equivalent), as accredited by the BPS, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the HCPC and/or BPS.
  • OR Professional qualification (e.g.) RMN/OT/Social Worker Post-graduate diploma or qualification in another recognised NHS psychotherapy model such as psychodynamic psychotherapy, DBT or CBT.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post-qualification experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the life span and presenting with the full range of clinical severity in a variety of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, criminal justice, in-patient and residential care settings.
  • Able to maintain a high degree of professionalism within highly emotive and distressing clinical issues, verbal abuse and the threat of physical assault.
  • Experience of leading and contributing to the development of services.
  • Experience of delivering consultation and training to other professionals and health colleagues.
