Are you a Clinical, Forensic or Counselling Psychologist passionate about working with males (aged 15 to 18 years) in a custodial setting?
We are excited to invite you to become part of our Integrated Mental Health and Substance Misuse Team at HMYOI Werrington.
We will consider post registration experienced psychologists for a Band 8a position and those newly/recently qualified for a Band 7 opportunity (includes preceptorship and full training).

The systematic provision of psychology services to young people with trauma histories and complex mental health needs in a custodial environment. The approach is to work within the principles of the Framework for Integrated Care, working both directly with young people and indirectly via a consultation model. This involves providing specialist psychological assessments, leading to psychological formulations of distress; interpretation and opinion; and forming judgements to inform service provision and providing necessary psychological interventions.
Provide input to the integrated offender mental health and substance misuse team when required, to attend team meetings and contribute to the team’s processes and functions and to liaise and work with other areas of Specialism when required including as agreed with the team or cluster manager.
This role will incorporate complex assessments leading to psychotherapeutic formulations of distress; interpretation, of assessment instruments and forming intervention plans, and the delivery of interventions to this population.
To provide treatment and core psychological interventions in line with the stepped care model. In doing so,you will be responsible for adhering to relevant Inclusion SOP’s and Trust policies and professional ethics and standards and will be accountable for professional and clinical actions.
To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the area served by the team/service.

We are an established, diverse team comprising a Consultant Psychologist, Principal Psychologist, Mental Health Nurses, Recovery Practitioners, Speech and Language Therapist and a drama therapist.
Working to the Framework for Integrated Care you will be a key team member in supporting the embedding of the principles of Integrated Care across the custodial setting as a whole.
This will involve the production and implementation of psychological formulations to aid wider understanding of young people in custody, the facilitation of reflective practice sessions to the wider staffing teams, supporting with the identification and developing staff training. The approach will involve indirect work via consultancy to wider operational colleagues and some direct work with young people.
Delivering psychological assessments and evidence-based treatments (DBT, CBT, EMDR, FBT, MFT, NVR) to our young people individually and in groups.

- Post-graduate / Doctoral level qualification in Clinical, Counselling or Forensic Psychology as recognised by the Health Professions Council (HCPC).
- Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the life span and presenting with the full range of clinical severity in a variety of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, criminal justice, in-patient and residential care settings.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
- High level knowledge of psychological theory and practice. Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, formulation, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.

- Eligible for Chartership status with the British Psychological Society
- Further training in a specific psychological model / intervention specific to the role remit/area of work
- Experience of the application of therapy in different cultural contexts.
- Experience of working in a secure setting
