Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a competent, confident and enthusiastic Band 4 Occupational Therapy Assistant to join our team on a part time basis (12 hours a week) for a fixed term period of 12 months.

The post holder will work alongside the Occupational Therapist in the provision of evidence-based assessments and interventions as part of the Occupational Therapy Pathway in our multi-disciplinary team.

You will support children aged 0-19 years with therapy interventions in their homes, under the supervision and guidance of our Occupational Therapist.

The post holder will be responsible for assisting in the development and delivery of person-centred treatment and care plans where appropriate under the direction of the Occupational Therapist and to actively work as part of the wider team.

Theses duties will extend to using the Occupational Therapy process to assist in assessment, planning and the implementation of therapeutic activities. You will be expected to understand the MDT process and assist in the preparation of Occupational Therapy reports and take part in meetings.

Main duties of the job

The Assistant Practitioner Occupational Therapist will function as part of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) within the relevant team, to help provide a seamless service to clients, with proximal supervision from registered Occupational therapy staff.  They will contribute (via the MDT) to the development and implementation of collaborative, needs based care plans.  They will be skilled in taking the appropriate actions to achieve the planned outcome guided by standard operating procedures and protocols.

The Assistant Practitioner Occupational Therapist will frequently be expected to deliver direct assessment and treatment of clients and will manage their own caseload. They may support the induction and initial training of new students and new starters, 

The post is in development and may change over time and vary in application according to the needs of each individual Team.  Not all duties described below will be required but may be implemented as the role develops, in accordance with client & service needs, and the skills/aptitudes of the AP.

•         To maintain excellent standards of communication where complex and/or sensitive clinical information may have to be conveyed to other clinicians (e.g. in MDT or in external organisations as appropriate), or clients /relatives/carers.

•         Completion of relevant service user documentation on referral and discharge including Core Electronic patient information:

•         Collaborate with service user/carers groups to promote and practice shared decision making.

•         Prepare and present accurate reports, both written and verbal.

•         Adopt and oversee accurate, robust and high stands of record keeping.

•         Participate in MDT reviews, daily reviews, ward meetings and handovers.

•         Promote a culture of compassion where relationships are based on compassion, kindness, respect and dignity.

•         Identify areas of concern and escalate as required.

•         Demonstrate initiative and decision making skills within defined parameters, including the management of challenging behaviour.

•         Plan tasks guided by standard operating procedures and protocols.

•         Organise own workload on a daily basis ensuring the timely completion of assigned tasks.

•         Deliver and maintain high standards of clinical care and contribute to achieving the Care Quality Commission Essential Standards.  The AP will identify any circumstances or practices which may compromise standards, quality of care and/or patient safety

•         Assist in the development of individual care plans based on a person centred assessment. And contribute to risk planning/assessments.

•         Deliver therapeutic clinical based interventions and facilitate activities that meet individual needs.

•         Provide advice and guidance in relation to the promotion of service user health and wellbeing.

•         The role will include visits to service user homes or other establishments such as schools and colleges.

•         Implementation of new/revised trust policies.

•         The AP may have a role in the ordering of equipment and supplies

•         Assist in the collation of data from a variety of sources.  Such data will contribute to clinical audit, surveys, freedom of information requests etc.
