Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician (PTPT)

This role is to work as a Pre-Registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician, learning and practicing the knowledge skills and behaviours required to become a registered Pharmacy Technician. You will complete a training programme allowing you to experience all aspects of pharmacy.

This is a 2-year full-time, fixed term apprenticeship, starting in February 2026, which will result in you completing the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians, which is required to enable you to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) as a Pharmacy Technician.  This PTPT training will be hospital based, primarily within the Pharmacy Department, Harplands Hospital.

Main duties of the job

You will gain experience in all aspects of pharmacy services including ward based clinical pharmacy where you will be interviewing patients about their medications on admission, working as part of the multidisciplinary team to ensure all medications are available for the patient, including the provision of leave & / or discharge medication.  You will be trained in dispensing, medicines optimisation, stock management and procurement.

We will provide a training plan for the successful student to ensure a full and engaging experience. The post includes hands-on work experience, and 1 day per week study leave, which is currently a combination of self-directed learning and college time. The college enrolment will be for February 2026.

You will study to achieve: -
• Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians, a two-year training program with and End Point Assessment (EPA) process at the end stages of the course.
Learners who achieve the Pearson Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians can apply for professional registration as pharmacy technicians, with The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Entry requirements for this regionally funded post are as follows:

GCSE’s: Math’s C, English and Science (at C or above) and 3 other subjects at a minimum of grade C .

Or

Pharmacy Services QCF Level 2 or equivalent with 12 months current experience and hold a functional skills level 2 qualification (or equivalent) in Maths and English.

Or

Three ‘A’ levels, one of which is a relevant science subject and Maths C (GCSE or equivalent).

Or

Degree in science or humanities and Maths C (GCSE or equivalent).

If a candidate has the new numbering system of grades for GCSE please use the below:

 Where a grade C is required they must have 4 or above.

 The successful candidate will need to be motivated and organised with a positive friendly can-do attitude. Be hardworking, reliable and willing to undertake work-based competencies as well as proactive within their studies.

The salary for this training post is 70% of the top of a Band 4 pay band year 1 and then 75% of the top of a Band 4 pay band Year 2. (Annex 21/U). For existing NHS staff pay preservation will be available. (Annex 30). This can be discussed further at interview.  The annual leave entitlement would be 27 annual days per year plus Bank Holidays.
