Job overview

We are seeking a capable, enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our friendly and dedicated team in the Cellular Pathology Department at The Royal Stoke University Hospital. 

If suitable applications from candidates with a completed Specialist Portfolio are not received, applications will be considered from current Band 5 Trainee Biomedical Scientists who have already completed at least 50% of their Specialist Portfolio (Banding will increase to Band 6 upon completion of Portfolio).

Main duties of the job

To be an efficient and flexible member of the laboratory team providing a high quality diagnostic service through specialist scientific and technical activities commensurate with the training and education of a Biomedical Scientist registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).

To provide specialist advice to clinicians (and to other laboratory users).

To work within the written Policies and Procedures of the Department especially in relation to Health and Safety and Quality.

To maintain competence to practice and to improve professional expertise through engagement in Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

To supervise team members; providing training and problem solving for specialist equipment.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc (Hons) Biomedical degree of equivalent.
  • IBMS Specialist Portfolio (or equivalent).
  • Registered with HCPC.
  • Evidence of CPD.
  • Competence in basic tissue transfer and/or dissection.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Histopathology techniques and practices.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • At least 5 years post registration experience
  • Staff management experience
  • Experience working with complex, specialist equipment
  • Experience of Pathology IT systems
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working in an acute trust
  • Experience of working in a busy Microbiology Laboratory

Skills and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Able to work as part of a team and independently
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Health & Safety regulations and governing bodies
  • Good oral and written communication
  • Ability to work to SOPs, review and contribute to their implementation
  • Ability to analyse and problem solve

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
  • Prepared to work flexibly, including participating out of routine hours service arrangements when required to do so.
