Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our department and compliment our Neurosurgical consultant workforce, the candidate will have a specialist interest in Neuro Oncology surgery. This is a Locum post in Neurosurgery.  The Neurosurgical department runs alongside a separate Spinal Team, with whom we work very closely. We are part of a Major Trauma Centre and provide an adult Neurosurgical service that serves the population of Staffordshire, Shropshire, South Cheshire and North Wales.

We are a dynamic unit which has undergone a significant period of growth and development in recent years. Within the department we have well established sub-specialisation. We are looking for someone who is willing to engage with our strong team ethos.

Applicants will have experience in Neuro Oncology, general cranial neurosurgery but will have an extended surgical skillset for Oncology disorders and surgery.

Main duties of the job

You will take responsibility for the inpatient and outpatient care of neurosurgical patients including the provision of emergency cranial surgery and care. 

You may be required to participate in the education and training of medical students, junior doctors, nursing and other professionals allied to medicine. You may be involved in the supervision and teaching of medical students attached to the department. With Keele University Medical School excellent opportunities exist for greater involvement in teaching in many different areas of the undergraduate curriculum.

You will be expected to take an appropriate share in the management and administrative workload of the Department.  All Consultants are involved in planning and developing the service.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration with a License to practise.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: CCT - proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview.
  • CESR or European Community Rights.
  • An appropriate higher surgical qualification (FRCS or Equivalent)

Clinical Experience and Training

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCST in Neurosurgery
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care patients
  • Candidates must have experience in the management of Neuro Oncology cases
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion in a range of problems within speciality
  • Post CCT training or specialist fellowship or experience in Neurosurgery for Neuro Oncology surgery to complement the department
Desirable criteria
  • Consultant level experience in Neuro-Oncology surgery

Professional and Multidisciplinary Team Working

Essential criteria
  • Experience of in Neuro-Oncology MDT
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of supervising specialist / core and foundation trainees

Academic achievements, Research, Publications:

Essential criteria
  • Research experience
  • Current good clinical practice certificate
  • Experience of clinical audit
  • Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision making
Desirable criteria
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals

Management and Administrative Experience:
