Locum Glaucoma Consultant

This is a 12 month locum  post to help manage the increasing demand on the glaucoma service.

The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the existing glaucoma team to deliver a high quality and timely service to the local population. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to shape and contribute to the development of the service. They will also work closely with the current team of consultant colleagues and participate in a 1 in 9 on call rota.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the general ophthalmic and cataract service and flexibility is required to meet the departments service commitment to delivery of efficient, safe and high quality patient care.

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

The successful applicant will participate in outpatient activity leading and managing both specialist glaucoma and general ophthalmology clinics, be involved in preoperative management prior to surgery, and in all aspects of the operative care of the patients. It is anticipated that the surgeon will spend the equivalent of at two sessions in the operating theatre and three/four sessions a week in outpatient clinic in addition to administrative, management, clinical governance and supporting professional activity duties. S/he will work closely with clinical colleague, nursing and other allied health care staff in order to enhance the level of patient care at the Trust.

From these hospitals we provide a full range of general acute hospital services for people living in and around Staffordshire and beyond. The Trust also provides specialised services for three million people in a wider area, including neighbouring counties and North Wales.

Our specialised services include cancer diagnosis and treatment, cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, renal and dialysis services, neonatal intensive care and paediatric intensive care. We are recognised for our particular expertise in trauma, respiratory conditions, spinal surgery, upper gastro-intestinal surgery, complex orthopaedic surgery, laparoscopic surgery and the management of liver conditions. The Trust has some of the most modern operating theatres in Europe.

Qualifications

  • FRCOphth (or equivalent)
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practice
  • Entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following: a) Certificate of completion of Training (CCT) (The proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview. b) Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR). c) European Community Rights

  • Higher degree

Clinical Experience & Training

  • Appropriate experience and competencies as defined in the basic and higher specialist training curriculum of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists or demonstrate evidence of sound Ophthalmic training equivalent to that recognised in the UK.

  • Comprehensive and sound knowledge of general ophthalmology and in particular glaucoma subspecialty
  • Evidence of ability to perform safe and skilful cataract surgery as well as advanced subspecialty specific procedures.

  • Audit of surgical procedures

Academic Achievements, Research, Publications
