This Locum post is based at Staffordshire Children’s Hospital at Royal Stoke, which is part of the University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust. Based at the child development centre on the Royal Stoke site, the successful applicant will join a well-established community paediatric team to provide a comprehensive community paediatric service for Stoke on Trent and North Staffordshire.  This will include participation in the child protection rota 9-5 Monday to Friday, with availability at weekends for telephone consultation only. There is no requirement to participate in the West Midlands SARC service.

The current holder of this post is retiring, and the post will be readvertised as a substantive post once RCPCH approval has been obtained.

The post holder will assess, diagnose and manage common community paediatric problems, including pre-school ASD. ADHD assessment is not required as this is provided by the local CAMHS service.

This post is based at Staffordshire Children’s Hospital at Royal Stoke which is part of the University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust. The paediatric department at UHNM primarily delivers acute paediatric care to the local children of Staffordshire and beyond.

This post is for a General Paediatric within Community Paediatrics. The successful candidate will become part of a team of 7 whole time equivalent consultants delivering community paediatric services.

Staffordshire Children's Hospital is part of UHNM which has two sites: Royal Stoke University Hospital, located in Stoke-on-Trent, and County Hospital, located in Stafford. The Staffordshire Children’s Hospital is based at the Royal Stoke site, all inpatient services for children are there. Outpatient clinics run at both sites.

The Paediatric Department is one of the largest in the country with a number of sub speciality areas receiving tertiary care referrals. The Trust has a purpose built Children’s Centre comprising of inpatient wards, Children’s A&E and admissions unit and outpatients department adjacent to the Child Development Centre. The Child Health Directorate provides a wide range of services encompassing acute paediatrics, paediatric and neonatal intensive care, outpatients and community paediatrics. We also provide consultant support to the children’s emergency centre and deliver a range of paediatric general and speciality clinics on the County Hospital site.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential criteria
  • MRCPCH or equivalent higher qualification
  • Full GMC Registration
  • MBChB/MBBS or equivalent
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview)
  • European Community Rights APLS or EPLS or PALS provider
Desirable criteria
  • Further Higher Degree, e.g. MD, PhD
  • Level 3 safeguarding training

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience in general and community paediatrics equivalent to that required for UK CCT in community paediatrics.
  • Level 3 Child protection.
  • Experience in managing paediatric patients with disabilities and their associated medical problems.
  • Training in standardised developmental assessments; e.g. Bayleys, Griffiths etc.
  • Experience of supervising junior medical staff.

  • Management Qualification

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and respond appropriately to service needs
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of paediatric service
  • Good understanding of the structure and processes of the NHS

  • Experience and understanding of clinical audit
