UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS OF NORTH MIDLANDS NHS TRUST AND DOUGLAS MACMILLAN HOSPICE
Applications are invited for the above post working in the University Hospitals of North Midlands and Douglas Macmillan Hospice. This is an exciting opportunity to join the established consultant and multidisciplinary teams in both organisations to provide Specialist Palliative care services to the populations of Staffordshire and Cheshire. This is an 8 PA post which includes an on-call commitment attracting category B availability supplement.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will join an existing dynamic team of 5 consultants working in the Staffordshire area to expand the Specialist Palliative Care services provided in the University Hospitals of North Midlands and the Douglas Macmillan Hospice. The successful candidate will be a core member of the Hospital Palliative Care Team working in both hospital sites providing specialist palliative advice, outpatient services and inpatient care for our 10 palliative medicine beds. The successful candidate will also be a core member of the Douglas Macmillan Hospice team providing specialist palliative care services for both inpatients and community patients.

Douglas Macmillan Hospice
Dougie Mac is an open-culture organisation, underpinned by clear strategic aims, vision and values. We have a 28 bedded adult inpatient unit covering a population of around 500,000, well established community Palliative Care Nurse Specialist team, with Admiral Nurses core to the team and a vibrant wellbeing centre. Education is a priority and training of future doctors is core to our ethos. We are research active with NIHR and have a research collaboration and joint strategy with Staffordshire University, working on collaborative projects to improve/inform our user experience across all services.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the GMC Possession of MRCP.
- Entry on Specialist Register or in U.K. training scheme or within 6 months of award of CCT at time of interview or CESR application in progress through Portfolio Pathway for Specialist Registration.
Desirable criteria
- A higher degree (eg MSc in Palliative Medicine)
Clinical experience
Essential criteria
- Good general clinical experience in the specialty including of working in a hospice setting.
- Experience of liaising and co-ordinating care between multiple clinical teams
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion in a range of problems within all areas of palliative medicine.
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients.
- Experience of conducting clinical audit.
Professional and Multidisciplinary Team Working
Essential criteria
- Ability to work effectively with colleagues and within a team
- Ability to work flexibly and accommodate changes in work plan when necessary for the smooth running of the department.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of service development
Academic Achievements, Research, Publications
Essential criteria
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
- An awareness of current speciality specific developments, initiatives and issues
- Evidence of training in research methodology

- Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last five years.
- Evidence of having undertaken original research
Management and Administrative Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
- Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgements when faced with conflicting pressures
- Ability to motivate and develop the multi-disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives
Teaching and Training Experience

- Enthusiasm and ability to teach clinical skills to medical staff and students, and staff of other disciplines.

- Recognised teaching skills course/ medical education qualification
