This post is responsible for the centralised configuration and management of endpoint devices.  This encompasses approximately 20,000 Windows client devices and 7,500 mobile devices, including the packaging and deployment of software applications and settings via Microsoft System Center Endpoint Manager, Azure / Intune, Active Directory / Group Policy, to agreed configurations and security baselines.

Main duties of the job

  • Centralised configuration and management of endpoint devices including the packaging and deployment of software applications, settings and security baselines via Microsoft System Center Endpoint Manager, Azure / Intune, Active Directory / Group Policy, to agreed configurations and security baselines.
  • Centralised management of Sophos Central Antivirus ensuring endpoint devices have the latest updates and policies.
  • Ensuring that the Patch Management of High and Critical Vendor (Microsoft\Non-Microsoft) Updates are applied within 14 working days in line with NHS Digital guidance.
  • Configuration and Administration of Microsoft System Centre Endpoint Manager for the deployment of operating systems, software applications, security patch management and reporting.
  • Develop and deploy solutions for identified security vulnerabilities including those directly identified through the Microsoft 365 Defender websites.
  • Ongoing development of new operating systems and applications to ensure compatibility and compliance with existing infrastructure to meet the changing needs of our customers.
  • Investigation of new systems and technology to provide additional value and efficiencies to our customers.
  • Use Problem management processes to identify common incidents, develop documented workarounds, complete root-cause analysis, and apply long term fixes to eliminate recurring incidents.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Systems and equipment

Responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair and safe use of expensive and highly complex hardware and software on a day to day basis on behalf of customers.

 

Decisions and judgements

Work is mostly performed with little supervision and requires initiative and judgment when dealing with the wide range of IM&T issues. 

 

The post holder will be expected to adapt practice to meet individual customer requirements, independently analysing situations and taking into consideration complex facts and interpreting these appropriately when problem solving.

 

Perform options appraisals in order to compare a range of options related to the resolution of technical problems.

 

Communication and relationships

The post holder must employ excellent communication skills both verbal and written particularly when communicating complex IM&T related information to own peer groups, non-technical staff, customers and suppliers.

 

The post holder must employ excellent communication skills as there are often complicated and technical barriers to communication.

Post holder will need to use tact, persuasion and diplomacy when explaining IT related problems to customers that may be inconvenienced. 

 

Comprehend technical IT issues as described by customers, peer group and external suppliers in verbal and written form.

 

Physical demands of the job

Advanced keyboard skills: must have a highly developed skill in the use of computer keyboards to ensure data entry is both accurate and timely.

 

Continuous VDU use for long period of time and sitting in a restricted position.

May be required to occasionally carry or move equipment without aids. E.g. personal computers, printers, network hardware & servers.

 

May occasionally be required to work in a dusty, dirty or cramped environments when dealing with PC equipment, networking equipment or cabling runs.

 

Frequent requirement to use road transportation.

 

Most Challenging/difficult parts of the job

Frequent requirement for prolonged periods of concentration e.g. during a major incident.

 

Maintaining specialist knowledge of a range of ever changing IT software, hardware and infrastructure.

Frequent interruptions resulting from involvement in multiple projects and day to day queries and issues.

A high level of concentration is required on a daily basis to maintain accuracy of solutions being implemented sometimes for extended periods of time.

Making decisions in the field with limited or no backup and support that can affect clinical systems and patient care. 

Freedom to act

Required to act independently within the departmental guidelines and decide when it is necessary to escalate issues and problems to a supervisor or a more senior technical person.

 

Must work within defined departmental and national protocols/policies and professional code of conduct. 

 

General

Undertake such other duties as may be required from time to time in accordance with the nature and grading of the post.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Foundation Degree/HND or extensive and relevant work experience
  • Microsoft accredited training for Windows 10 / Server 2016 or above
  • Full UK driving license - Category B
Desirable criteria
  • Foundation Certificate in ITIL Service Management
  • Microsoft Certified qualification for Windows 10 / Server 2016 or above
  • • Degree in an IT related subject

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of working in a Microsoft based IT Support role
  • Experience supporting current Microsoft client and server operating systems
  • Experience administering a Windows Domain using Active Directory
  • Experience of administering Microsoft System Center Endpoint Manager
  • Experience of administering enterprise-level antivirus solutions
  • Experience of supporting current software applications including Microsoft Office
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Healthcare IT
  • Experience of developing and supporting evolving technologies
  • Experience of Supporting current Microsoft networking technologies

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Specialist knowledge and expertise in IT Service Management frameworks such as ITIL
  • Significant knowledge of Microsoft System Centre products
