We have a very exciting opportunity for an experienced technician to come and join our well equipped, busy, full service dental and maxillofacial laboratory.
The position of Deputy Laboratory Manager requires the post holder to manage the dental technical services and production. With responsibility for 7 staff and managing the department in the absence of the Head of Department.
Our clinical department has a varied cohort of patients that often require challenging technical support. The successful candidate will be part of the team to support our clinicians and produce fixed crowns, bridges and removable appliances either conventionally or implant retained using a wide variety of materials and techniques, including digital design.
Our patients may be under treatment for some considerable time. You will meet many in this role as you help shape their treatment and full rehabilitation. This makes this opportunity extremely rewarding and fulfilling.

Main duties of the job
To manage the production and quality of a specialist multidisciplinary technical team.
Work closely with and provide advice to consultants, medical staff and laboratory colleagues on the treatment of patients that present complex rehabilitation challenges
Construct, advise and provide technical solutions for rehabilitation patients using fixed and removable, conventional and implant retained designs.
In conjunction with and when deputising for the Head of Department, will lead the laboratory service i.e. accept patient referrals, organise clinic appointments and treatment plans.
To be department deputy and be responsible for and manage the service in the absence of the Head of Department.
Participate in development of staff by imparting knowledge and technical demonstrations.
To work flexibly in order to deliver the Directorate agenda and to offer support to other colleagues including cover in times of absence.
To provide general support to the Head of Department, ensuring in particular that services are delivered effectively in the interests of patient care.
To evaluate and implement new techniques as they are developed.
To liaise with internal and external clients regarding laboratory turnaround and manage deadlines.
To work safely adhering and understanding Health and Safety, COSHH and the Medical Devices Regulations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Convey highly complex information on the design and application of medical devices and prostheses. This information may be conveyed to individual Consultants or junior medical staff or to larger Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDT). Highly complex information may also have to be communicated in a clear format to patients who need assistance in the Outpatient clinic or by telephone.
Develop and improve the dental technical and maxillofacial services for clinical departments.
Operate within accepted professional guidelines and Trust Policies.
Daily interaction with the Head of Department.
Patient case conferences, joint clinics and interactions with Consultants, their juniors and support staff, contributing as a member of the Multi- Disciplinary Team – Head and Neck Cancer.
Complete cases where complex/highly complex treatment planning is solely devised and implemented. Analysis of each case will present different treatment options. Have the ability to analyse complex/highly complex facts, including design of appliances and complex treatment plans and make recommendations on medical device design.
Case conferences, joint clinics and interaction with other clinical staff in order to support patients receiving care.
Support Consultants in Maxillofacial, Restorative, Orthodontics, Breast, Ear nose and Throat, Ophthalmic, Plastic Surgery, Oncology and Neurosurgery.
Devise and plan new complex appliances or prostheses.
The role includes daily use of IT skills for the laboratory booking and tracking system.
Daily use of Medway and iPortal to track patient appointments and record patient notes.
Design and plan complex cases using three-dimensional digital technology.
Interpret complex/highly complex instructions via laboratory prescriptions.
Be responsible for the management and provision of technical services including highly complex restorations and prostheses.
Deputise in the absence of the Head of Department.
Manage and prioritise own workload and that of the staff within Prosthetics Department.
To identify and implement on-going modernisation and new ways of working and innovation within specific areas of technology.
