Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthetics

The post-holder will be responsible for providing comprehensive clinical management for critically ill patients in the critical care unit and beyond. The unit has 36 beds and delivers general, trauma and neuro- critical care for the local population and referred patients for tertiary services. The unit treats around 1400 patients per annum. UHNM is a Major Trauma Centre with all major specialities except Burns and solid organ transplant under one roof including paediatric intensive care. The successful candidate will join a pro-active team developing a programme of work to transform critical care into a centre of excellence. We have specific interests in rehabilitation- early in the care pathway of our patients and Neuro-trauma. However, we would welcome candidates with other interests. 

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to work with other members of the ICU Team to provide first class clinical care in Adult Intensive Care. You will be required to participate in the education and training of medical students, junior doctors, Advanced Critical Care Practitioners, nursing and other professionals allied to medicine. You will provide clinical leadership, including delivery of the Clinical Quality Indicators for ICM.

Our unit was  ranked as “outstanding” in the last CQC report.

Working for our organisation

The Trust consists of two sites, the larger Royal Stoke University Hospital in Stoke on Trent and the smaller County Hospital situated in Stafford, about 17 miles south of Stoke. Critical Care services are only based in Royal Stoke University Hospital.  The £350 million state-of-the-art hospital complex at the Royal Stoke site opened in March 2013 bringing all acute services (including Neurosurgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery) to a single site.

UHNM employs 10,300 staff based across the Royal Stoke University Hospital and the County Hospital sites. The on-site Keele Undergraduate Medical School opened in September 2002.

UHNM delivers general acute services for approximately 700.000 people living  in and around Staffordshire. We are also the Major Trauma Centre for 3 million people in a wider area including neighbouring counties and North Wales.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with GMC
  • FRCA/MRCP or equivalent
  • Success in Intercollegiate specialty examination or overseas equivalent EDIC or UK specialty accreditation if acquired prior to introduction of such examinations
  • Advanced training in intensive care medicine through the Inter-Collegiate Board or equivalent including relevant CESR experience
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Diploma in ICM or equivalent
  • Additional Speciality accreditation in Anaesthesia, Acute Medicine or Respiratory Medicine, the candidate must have the prospect of an entry in the relevant specialty register at the time of commencement of post

Clinical Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Clinical training and experience in Intensive Care Medicine required for UK CSST

Research

Essential criteria
  • Proven research ability including publications in refereed journals safe sound practical procedures
Desirable criteria
  • MD or PhD
