Job overview

 The post is to work on the Tier 2 (middle grade) neonatal rota for 12 months from September 2025 as a Senior Training Fellow (ST3-ST5 equivalent).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be supported by a resident junior tier doctor or Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (covering purely neonatology) and a neonatal consultant.

This is an opportunity to gain tertiary experience in on the Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Stoke University Hospital.

The unit is a Lead Centre and Regional Intensive Care Unit within our newborn network , receiving referrals for tertiary intensive care, including, HFOV, NO and therapeutic hypothermia. The birth population is 6,800 -7,000 deliveries per year. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a purpose built modern unit opened in 2009, providing 6 intensive care, 6 high dependency, 14 special care cots.

The neonatal service is and active training unit and in conjunction with Keele Universities, the on-site Undergraduate Medical School opened in September 2002. We train all levels of trainees including neonatal grid posts.


We are part of the Child Health Directorate, which is one of the largest in the country, with many paediatric sub specialties receiving tertiary care referrals, Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and Community Paediatrics.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post is to work on the Tier 2 (middle grade) neonatal rota for a fixed contract until August 2026 (Mat leave).

Key tasks will include:

  • Working under the supervision of the neonatal consultants and participating in ward rounds in rooms 1, 2 and 3 on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
  • Carrying out ward rounds in rooms 2, 3 and on the Transitional Care Unit and discussing management plans with neonatal consultants.
  • Attending high risk deliveries occurring anywhere in the maternity centre.
  • Supporting the junior tier doctors and ANNPs in carrying out examinations on babies who meet the criteria for a paediatric Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) and entering the data onto the SMART4NIPE database.
  • Supporting and supervising the junior tier doctors and ANNPs in the assessment and management of babies on NICU, the postnatal wards and labour wards.
  • Completing admission and discharge paperwork on the Badger database for babies admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Transitional Care Unit.
  • Communicating with parents of babies on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Transitional Care Unit, postnatal wards and after discharge, as required.
  • Carrying out investigations on babies on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Transitional Care Unit and postnatal wards, as required, under the supervision of the neonatal consultants.
  • Carrying out practical procedures, according to level of competence, under the supervision of the neonatal consultants.
  • Participation in the neonatal education programme, including the possibility to carry out an audit.
  • Assessing and managing babies in Neonatal Outpatient Clinic.
  • Working as part of the multidisciplinary team of neonatal consultants, neonatal middle grade and junior doctors, Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners and the neonatal nursing team

 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration
  • MRCPCH examination
Desirable criteria
  • Awards/distinctions whilst studying for 1st degree
  • Academic and extracurricular achievements
  • Additional postgraduate qualification i.e MD

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 6 months experience of working on a tier 2 rota on a UK NICU
  • At least 24 month experience of working in general paediatrics and neonatology on the tier 1 rota in the UK
  • NLS provider
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working on the middle grade tier on the neonatal or general paediatric rota in UK
