Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic and motivated Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join our friendly team at the University Hospital of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM). 

A key component of this role is dysphagia and we are also interested in experienced Band 5’s who have completed their dysphagia competencies and are ready for career progression, less experienced Band 5’s who are in the process of completing their dysphagia competencies and want to embrace the opportunity to take a Band 5-6 progression role, or therapists who wish to return to practice and require support to complete their return to practice documentation

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide Speech and Language Therapy services across the inpatient settings of Royal Stoke and County Hospital.  This is a dynamic post that requires the post holder to manage a varied caseload, including dysphagia and disorders of communication, and work closely with uni/multi-disciplinary teams/agencies in addressing a range of care/support issues across the spectrum of conditions, facilitating safe and effective early discharge and improving the health and wellbeing of the population served.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Be competent as appropriate to the requirement of the role

Demonstrate at all times the Trust Values of: Kind, Excellent, Together

Be competent in the assessment and management of inpatients with dysphagia across all acute ward areas at Royal Stoke and County Hospital

 

Be skilled in the assessment of communication and the implementation and evaluation of care/support packages.

Demonstrate initiative and autonomy, whilst being creative in finding solutions to problems

Fulfil supervisory responsibilities as required

Fulfil work to support service development, as part of the wider SLT team

Support the training and development of BSc and MSc students

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Assessment and management of patients with complex communication and swallowing disorders
  • Experience working within the NHS
  • Experience working within a hospital setting
  • Effective working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to prioritise a clinical caseload safely and to delegate to other members of the team appropriately
  • Experience of instrumental assessment of dysphagia, i.e VF or FEES

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Registration with HCPC
Desirable criteria
  • Post Graduate RCSLT accredited dysphagia course
