Apprentice Building Craftsperson

NHS AfC: Band 3

Job overview

Build your future while helping build and maintain vital NHS spaces.

We’re offering an exciting opportunity to join our Estates team as an Apprentice Building Craftsperson. This role is the perfect starting point for anyone looking to develop practical skills while contributing to the safe and effective running of NHS facilities.

As an apprentice, you’ll gain hands-on experience supporting the maintenance and improvement of buildings and infrastructure across hospital sites and grounds. You’ll assist with planned maintenance, repairs, and occasional project work, learning how to deliver high-quality workmanship in line with current building standards and health regulations.

Working alongside experienced professionals, you’ll develop a broad range of building skills—from general repairs to understanding how healthcare environments are maintained to strict safety and compliance standards. Every day will bring new learning opportunities and the chance to see the real impact of your work.

You’ll report daily to supportive Team Leaders who will guide your development and help you grow in confidence and capability. Alongside practical experience, you’ll receive structured training and work towards recognised qualifications.

We’re looking for someone who is ambitious and eager to learn, with a genuine interest in construction or building maintenance. In return, you’ll gain valuable skills, ongoing support, and a clear pathway into a rewarding career within the NHS.

Main duties of the job

  • Attend all off-the-job training components of the apprenticeship as agreed with your manager and apprenticeship training provider.
  • Proactively engage in the on-the-job activities in the workplace to become competent in the apprenticeship standard and role.
  • Complete all apprenticeship course work, assessments and self-directed study in a timely way as agreed with your workplace supervisor and the apprenticeship training provider.
  • Undertake all statutory and mandatory training required for the job role. This will be in addition to the apprenticeship training requirements

It has 500+ beds and is a partner teaching hospital of the University of Cambridge.

Adult and paediatric community services, provided in collaboration with West Suffolk Alliance partners, include a range of nursing, therapy, specialist, and ongoing temporary care and rehabilitation, some at our Newmarket Community Hospital.

We do our utmost to achieve outstanding clinical outcomes for patients and our values of fairness, inclusivity, respect, safety and team work guide how we work and behave as a team.

With nearly 5,000 staff, from all over the world, we strive to make our organisation a great place to work. Whatever your role or ambition, we want to help you be the best you can be.
