Main duties of the job

The Role

We are looking for two exceptional Emergency Medicine clinicians to join our consultant team. We welcome applicants with an interest or expertise in areas such as:

• Resuscitation
• Ultrasound
• Clinical governance
• Medical leadership
• Teaching and education

The post is offered on an annualised rota on a 1:10 on-call basis, designed to provide flexibility while maintaining robust senior coverage across the department.

About Our Emergency Department

Our department includes:
• A majors and resuscitation area
• A Rapid Assessment and Treatment (RAT) zone
• A dedicated additional majors unit with single cubicles for managing infectious patients
• A paediatric emergency area
• A minor injuries and illnesses unit

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBChB or MBBS or equivalent
  • FRCEM or equivalent
  • ALS or equivalent certification
  • ATLS or equivalent certification
  • APLS or equivalent certification
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register and hold a licence to practise or be eligible for entry on the Register (within six months of completion of Certificate of Completion of Training) at time of interview.
Desirable criteria
  • Instructor status in life support course

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of thorough training in Emergency Medicine
  • Able to offer expert clinical opinion on all aspects within EM. Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
Desirable criteria
  • Substantive work in UK Emergency Medicine
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in relevant specialty

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues which could be demonstrated by one of the following that applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English.  PLAB1  PLAB2 If applicants believe that they have adequate communication skills, but do not fit into one of the examples they need to provide evidence.
  • Has a thorough knowledge and understanding of “Good Medical Practice” from the GMC and meets its requirements
  • Ability to work as an effective part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to build good working relations with peers & staff
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Technical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to organise and prioritise workload
  • An understanding of accountability for patient care

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate personal continuing development
  • Participation in QIP
  • Understanding of patient safety and risk management
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of implementing relevant evidence-based medicine
  • Experience of guideline appraisal

Research

Essential criteria
  • Interest in research and commitment to support research or skills in critical appraisal.
Desirable criteria
  • Recent published clinical research in peer reviewed journal
  • Experience of literature appraisal

Management Ability

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable leadership qualities
  • IT literacy
  • Ability to share departmental management duties
  • Time management skills
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of management experience or training

Teaching/Education

Essential criteria
  • Experience in effective teaching

  • Recognised teaching qualification
