Job overview

This post will be based on an acute care of the elderly ward at the West Suffolk Hospital. The ward is staffed by 3 consultants in geriatric medicine, and, Foundation trainees, 3 SHO level trainees and one IMT3/ST3+ level doctor.

This is a 27 bed ward admitting patients with a wide variety of renal disorders (including but not limited to Acute Kidney injury, Chronic kidney disease, patients with a renal transplant, patients requiring dialysis, patients with glomerulonephritis/ vasculitis). There are also patients admitted with a variety of acute medical conditions, providing opportunity to manage and experience a wide spectrum of clinical conditions. The ward is staffed by 3 Consultant Nephrologists, alongside Foundation trainees, 2 SHO level trainees and additionally two IMT3/ST3+ level trainees.

This role is scheduled to start in August and will run until February. Therefore, only candidates who are available to commence employment from August should apply for this position.

Main duties of the job

  • Work as part of team to provide best medical management to patients under your care.
  • Supervise and teach more junior staff on the ward.
  • Liaise with relatives and carers.
  • Liaise with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Lead Medical Team during on calls and out of hours, including management of cardiac arrest calls.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The department of Geriatric Medicine provides acute in-patient services, post-acute rehabilitation, stroke and ortho-geriatric services and out-patient clinics at the West Suffolk Hospital site. In addition we provide out-patient clinics, and falls clinics in conjunction with Suffolk PCT at community hospitals in Newmarket and Sudbury and medical services to a 16 bedded rehabilitation ward in the community hospital at Newmarket.

We have a 24 bedded stroke unit and operate a 24 hour a day stroke thrombolysis service and daily TIA assessment service supported by stroke specialist nurses. There is also an early supported discharge scheme for stroke.

We have a well-developed ortho-geriatric service supported by a consultant geriatrician and 2 trauma nurse specialists. Almost 95% of our hip fracture patients meet the criteria for the best practice tariff and we are the best hospital in the country providing hip fracture care.

We have two 33 bedded wards for older people with acute medical problems. The department takes the lead across the trust for developing pathways and strategies for patients with dementia and with falls and fracture.

The Geriatric Medicine Department currently comprises 7.8 WTE Consultants. We also have 2 SpRs from the Eastern Deanery Rotation, a clinical nurse specialist for older people and specialist stroke outreach nurses.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCP (UK)
Desirable criteria
  • MD, PhD or higher degree

Career progression

Essential criteria
  • Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances
  • Evidence that present achievement and performance is commensurate with totality of period of training
  • At least 24 months’ experience in medicine or an IMT, ACCS or equivalent programme (not including Foundation modules) by the time of commencement of ST3 training

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Hold full registration and licence to practise with the GMC • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competences from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/ Good Medical Practice including: • good clinical care • maintaining good medical practice • good relationships and communication with patients • good working relationships with colleagues • good teaching and training • professional behaviour and probity • delivery of good acute clinical care
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of completion of CT/ST1 or equivalent competences in medicine at time of application, and CT/ST2 competences in medicine by time of appointment, supported by evidence from work-based assessments of clinical performance and Multisource Feedback (DOPS, Mini-CEX, CBD, ACAT) or equivalent.
  • Previous clinical experience in Nephrology

Language skills

Essential criteria
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues which could be demonstrated by one of the following: that applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English; or have the following: - PLAB2 If applicants believe that they have adequate communication skills, but do not fit into one of the examples they need to provide evidence.
