Working for our organisation

#BeKnown at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust. By us. By our patients. By our community

We are a busy, friendly, rural NHS Trust providing high-quality care and compassion to more than a quarter of a million people across west Suffolk. We care for, treat and support people in hospital, at home and in various community settings.

The West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds provides acute and secondary care services (emergency department, maternity and neonatal services, day surgery unit, eye treatment centre, Macmillan unit and children's ward). It has 500+ beds and is a partner teaching hospital of the University of Cambridge.

Adult and paediatric community services, provided in collaboration with West Suffolk Alliance partners, include a range of nursing, therapy, specialist, and ongoing temporary care and rehabilitation, some at our Newmarket Community Hospital.

We do our utmost to achieve outstanding clinical outcomes for patients and our values of fairness, inclusivity, respect, safety and team work guide how we work and behave as a team.

With nearly 5,000 staff, from all over the world, we strive to make our organisation a great place to work. Whatever your role or ambition, we want to help you be the best you can be.

We promote a diverse and inclusive community where everyones voice counts and you can #BeKnown for whoever you are.

Join us. What will you #BeKnown for?

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We have a 24 bedded stroke unit and operate a 24 hour a day stroke thrombolysis service and daily TIA assessment service supported by stroke specialist nurses. There is also an early supported discharge scheme for stroke.
We have a well-developed ortho-geriatric service supported by a consultant geriatrician and 2 trauma nurse specialists. Almost 95% of our hip fracture patients meet the criteria for the best practice tariff and we are the best hospital in the country providing hip fracture care.

Acute admissions are assessed on a 22 Bedded Acute Assessment Unit (AAU), or in the Accident and Emergency Department. The AAU is staffed by its own team of consultants and junior staff who provide early senior clinical assessment of patients with high rates of same-day discharge. The AAU team runs the “take” from 8am until 9pm, and provides on-going care to patients on AAU. There is a multi-disciplinary “early intervention team” to support same or next-day discharge for appropriate patients, and a 12 bedded ambulatory area SDEC.
We operate a “ward-based” system of care for in-patients along with physicians from other specialties, with specialist wards for respiratory medicine, cardiology, gastroenterology and stroke as well as general acute wards. Each ward is staffed by 2-4 consultants and a team of junior staff.

The department of Geriatric Medicine provides acute in-patient services, post-acute rehabilitation, stroke and ortho-geriatric services and out-patient clinics at the West Suffolk Hospital site. In addition we provide out-patient clinics, and falls clinics in conjunction with Suffolk PCT at community hospitals in Newmarket and Sudbury and medical services to a 16 bedded rehabilitation ward in the community hospital at Newmarket.
