Inpatient Diabetes Specialist Nurse

Job overview

The post holder will work as part of the specialist diabetes team, as an autonomous practitioner in the provision of evidence based and high-quality diabetes care within the diabetes inpatient team. Ensuring good quality consistent care for people with diabetes and to enhance the care of patients with diabetes across all pathways.

·       To deliver a seamless service through the development of enhanced MDT processes and communication.

·       To contribute and provide high quality training for patients, staff and carers. 

·       To develop and enhance their skills and knowledge required for managing diabetes effectively. 

·       To support and develop with colleagues the promotion and development of services for diabetes patients across the primary/secondary interface and throughout the pathways. 

·       To have relevant expertise, skills including prescribing and knowledge related to possible investigations and treatment options and so to provide the patient with the necessary information to make informed choices. 

·       Where appropriate prescribe appropriate treatment as an independent non-medical prescriber.

·       In conjunction with the diabetes specialist nurse team, ensure the provision of a comprehensive nurse led service for patients with diabetes.

·       To reduce the length of stay for diabetes inpatients.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registration Level 1 Registered Nurse with 5 years post reg experience.
  • An advanced practitioner either through formal qualifications and or extensive clinical experience pertinent to the area.
  • Evidence of academic pathway towards a master’s degree.
  • Demonstration of personal and professional development.
  • Independent Prescriber and/or working towards qualification.
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant post-registration qualification.

Experience and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Proven experience at Band 6
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working.
  • Experience of developing, training, and education in clinical practice
  • Able to demonstrate a wide knowledge of current trends in nursing and application to practice
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of audit experience
  • Experience of implementing Service Improvement

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Good oral and written communication skills with people from a wide variety of backgrounds
