This is an exciting time to join the radiology department as we are helping to shape the care of our patients in the new Community Diagnostic Centre in Newmarket, and the new West Suffolk Hospital. 

You will be responsible for providing a range of personal care to patients and for carrying out a range of clinical duties under the guidance of a registered healthcare professional. 

Undertake high quality, caring and compassionate personal care/clinical and associated duties under the direction and supervision of the registered professional both independently and working as part of the multi-disciplinary team.

 

 

Main duties of the job

As an imaging assistant you will provide invaluable support to both the patients and your colleagues making a positive difference to our patients experience in the Radiology Department. You will ensure the smooth running of diagnostic lists liaising and communicating effectively with the multi-disciplinary team in a demanding and busy environment. As you gain knowledge, experience, and confidence in running an ultrasound list you will progress through other competencies enabling you to assist with biopsy lists, injections, barium studies and co-ordinating, supported by your colleagues. You will also be supported to learn the trusts IT systems namely e-care and CRIS.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical Practice:

 

1.    Work under the direction of a registered healthcare professional, participating in clinical care, prioritising workload appropriately and meeting competencies that safeguard practice and effectiveness.

  1. Work as part of a clinical care team delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the individual, in a co-operative, professional and constructive manner.

 

  1. Assist patients with personal hygiene and toileting.

 

  1. Prepare and support patients for a range of radiological examinations and procedures ensuring confidentiality and patient privacy is maintained.

 

  1. Support moving and handling, use of mobility aids, correct patient positioning, and observe for pressure areas and skin integrity. Report findings to service manager/senior colleague if appropriate.

 

  1. Proactively review patient’s medical record/history to obtain relevant information in order to proceed with the examination/procedure for example e-GFR and previous imaging. Seek advice from senior radiographer or nurse if below set threshold.

 

  1. Organise/book relevant additional tests as required to ensure appropriate patient management and preparation e.g. pre- hydration requirements.

 

  1. Develop positive relationships with parents, families and carers as required for the duration of the examination/procedure. This involves developing trust and confidence in a very short space of time.

 

  1. Be aware of the patient’s needs – emotional, social, physical, and cultural. Respect privacy, dignity and beliefs.  Acts in a way that supports equality and diversity values.

 

  1. Be actively involved in health promotion such as:
  • Reducing obesity
  • Smoking cessation

 

11.  Maintain confidentiality at all times.

 

 

  1. Report any information regarding the wellbeing of the patients to the registered healthcare professional in a timely manner.

 

  1. Manage and organise time and activities to support and meet the needs of individuals.

 

  1. Undertake a range of clinical tasks specific to the modality/area of work, for example cannula removal, assisting with biopsies and assisting with GI examinations.

 

  1. Provide and receive sensitive information concerning a patient’s medical condition.

 

  1. Be competent in the use of all relevant Radiology and Trusts IT systems. Demonstrate standard keyboard skills.

 

  1. Prepare trolleys and equipment for clinical use.

 

  1. Act in accordance with all organisational and local policies and procedures at all times.

 

  1. Actively participate in and attend departmental meetings as required and contribute positively to discussions about the improvement of care.

 

  1. Demonstrate a good understanding of principles of consent and ensure valid consent is obtained prior to undertaking nursing and care procedures.

 

  1. Demonstrate a good understanding of the Mental Capacity Act / Deprivation of Liberties and applies principles to everyday practice seeking advice / guidance from the registered healthcare professional as required.

 

  1. Promote health and safety maintaining best practice in health, safety and security.

 

  1. Ensure cleaning duties of the clinical areas and equipment are completed and documented accordingly

 

  1. Share ideas with colleagues to improve care and suggest areas for innovation.

 

  1. Carry out and participate in audit activities as required.

 

  1. Contribute to the improvement of service by reflecting on own practice and supporting that of others.

 

  1. Adhere to legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines both local and national.

 

  1. Work independently with regard to routine, delegated tasks, following established good practice and refer non-routine tasks appropriately. Work is supervised and evaluated on a routine basis.

 

  1. Follow treatment plans as prescribed by Registered Health Care Professionals and identify select activities that meet treatment goals.

 

30.   Support the clinical teams and senior staff with fault finding, problem solving, planning, organisation and management of workload, often requiring the consideration of several options. Support with inputting and reviewing relevant clinical patient data on CRIS/PACS.

 

  1. At the request of the Registered Health Care Professional, perform and record physiological measurements within the remit of the Imaging Assistant role and report accurately to the Registered Health Care Professional, the assessment undertaken on patients.

 

 

Training

 

  1. Undertake procedures as directed by a registered healthcare professional after successfully completing an accredited NVQ 3 (or equivalent) programme or appropriate apprenticeship.

 

  1. Undertake mandatory training updates as required by the Trust and in relation to area-specific working environment e.g. radiation protection, MRI safety.

 

  1. Maintain own level of competence and on-going CPD.

 

  1. Undertake role specific training for onward development of the role.

 

  1. Ensure smooth running of the team through facilitation of administrative support, including monitoring stock levels ensuring stock rotation.

 

  1. Prioritise tasks allocated and adjust as necessary.

 

  1. Adhere to Trust policies/procedures and guidelines at all times.

 

  1. Always ensure a neat and professional appearance, adhering to Trust Uniform Policy.

 

 

Communications and Key Working Relationships

 

40.  Communicate effectively with all patients, service users and colleagues as required, including the wider multi-disciplinary team. Demonstrate dignity and respect by giving consideration to potential barriers to understanding.

  1. Communicate effectively with colleagues, providing clear verbal, digital or written information and instructions when sharing information, delegating or handing over responsibility for care.

 

  1. Use communication tools (verbal and non-verbal) to gain informed consent with patients where there will often be barriers to effective communication e.g. loss of hearing, altered perception, expressive and receptive dysphasia, pain, fear etc. Tact may be required for situations where it is necessary to communicate in a manner that will neither offend nor antagonise.

 

  1. Provide general non-clinical advice, information and guidance to patients, relatives and visitors.

 

  1. Provide advice and support to colleagues, particularly those who are new to the role and/or less experienced.

 

  1. Contribute to a culture where all staff feel safe to raise their concerns, encouraging people to ‘speak up’.

 

 

Health & Safety, Governance and Quality

 

46.  Recognise and report any situations, behaviours or errors that could result in poor care outcomes.

  1. Report complaints, accidents, incidents, near misses and complaints following Trust policies/procedures.

 

  1. Assist in information collection from patients/ relatives as requested by trained staff.

 

  1. Ensure that documentation is completed in accordance with Trust and departmental requirements.

  1. Compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 – the post holder is required to fulfil a proactive role towards the management of risk in all of their actions. This entails the risk assessment of all situations, the taking of appropriate actions and reporting of all incidents, near misses and hazards, and a statutory duty of care for their own personal safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions.
