Detailed job description and main responsibilities

West Suffolk Hospital is a District General Hospital built in 1974. It serves a population of around 280,000 in West Suffolk and South Norfolk.

All major orthopaedic subspecialties and trauma are dealt with by the department, except spinal surgery and pelvic trauma. Paediatric-Orthopaedic services are covered on-site. Paediatric trauma is covered by the on-call duty Consultant. Spine conditions are managed by the regional back and neck service based in Ipswich. Pelvic and acetabular fractures and patients with multiple injuries are usually referred to the Major Trauma Unit at Addenbrookes, if they have not been taken there directly.

The Trauma & Orthopaedic Team at the West Suffolk is well regarded both locally and nationally. The department was one of the initials DOH beacon sites for the development of an enhanced recovery joint replacement program. The department has its own joint replacement surveillance program with follow up of over twenty-five years. We were early contributors to both the NJR and NHFD. There is an active culture of research with regular presentations from staff at national meetings and publications each year.

The department was one of the first in England to set up a ‘Virtual Fracture Clinic’ service. It was highlighted in a previous CQC inspection as an example of outstanding practice.
The department is regularly one of the top performing units with excellent outcomes on the NJR and the NHFD.
