The postholder will carry out or organise practical procedures such as bone marrow aspirates, trephine biopsies, lumbar puncture, pleural drainage, ascitic drain insertion, venesections and care of tunnelled central venous catheters (including their removal when appropriate).  Full training in these procedures will be made available to the appointee if necessary. The postholder will liaise regularly with nursing staff on the Intravenous and Vascular Access Services (IVAS) unit regarding arrangements for patients undergoing non-chemotherapy day case treatments (eg.  The postholder may also assist in the assessment and management of follow-up out-patients in haematology clinics under the supervision of the appropriate consultant (one or two clinics per week).  The postholder will liaise with the Haematology SpR and junior doctors to ensure that appropriate daytime cover for inpatients is always available (i.e., plan and negotiate/agree all planned leave).

The postholder will liaise with the Haematology SpR to provide weekend cover for the haematology inpatients approximately 1 in 8 weekends. This will consist of a ward round, which would normally be on a Saturday and last about half a day.
