Job overview

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Paediatric Pharmacist to join our dynamic pharmacy team. The ideal candidate will possess specialized knowledge and experience in pharmaceutical care for infants, children, and adolescents. This role involves collaborating with healthcare professionals to ensure the safe and effective use of medications in paediatric patients, educating staff and families, and contributing to the overall health and well-being of our younger population.

In this dynamic role, you’ll not only deliver essential pharmacy services to paediatric and neonatal patients but also have the opportunity to lead your own clinic as an Independent Prescriber. 

Furthermore, you'll enhance your clinical governance skills at the Alexander De Vine Hospice, where you'll be part of a compassionate team dedicated to providing exceptional care. 

Although based at Frimley Park Hospital, the role has cross-site responsibilities and leadership across the Trust.

The post holder must have hospital pharmacy experience involving clinical pharmacy skills as well teaching skills. The role requires the ability to work effectively as part of a team, through excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to motivate themselves and others. To be successful in this application the post holder must demonstrate confidence as a senior clinical pharmacist and be a role model to more junior staff.

Main duties of the job

  • To work closely with the senior pharmacists, clinicians, nursing and midwifery staff and other senior managers to develop pharmaceutical services to patients within the relevant directorates. 
  • To act as a source of expert advice and information on Women and Children’s medicines.
  • To participate in the development of Patient Group Directions when required.
  • To be responsible for the screening, monitoring and ordering of parenteral nutrition for neonates and paediatric patients
  • To cultivate links with tertiary and primary care, and to develop shared care agreements, working with the ICS and NHSE Pharmacist where necessary.
  • As a NMP  to fulfil this role within the individual’s area of competence, including medicines reconciliation on admission and prescribing of currently prescribed medicines on discharge. This will include prescribing for MCAs (Multi-compartment aids) on FP10s for supply by Community Pharmacists.
  • To take an active role in committees relating to specialist area e.g. paediatric clinical governance, Neonatal MDT and the Maternity forum.
  • To evaluate, plan and implement service developments to improve the quality of the pharmacy service to the specialist area.
  • To participate in the clinical training of junior pharmacists, pre-registration pharmacists and other pharmacy staff acting as an Educational Supervisor or Practice Supervisor.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Pharmacy degree (Masters level 4 years)
  • Registered with GPHC
  • Independent prescriber (or intention to become one )
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
  • Postgraduate clinical diploma or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • MSC or higher degree
  • UKCPA membership
  • RPS membership
  • Formal management qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of producing guidelines
  • Experience of producing drug appraisals
  • Experience of managing staff
  • Significant post-qualification experience working as a pharmacist in a clinical environment
Desirable criteria
  • Regular experience of providing clinical pharmacy support
  • Clinical audit experience
  • Teaching /tutoring experience
