Junior Sister/Charge Nurse (Part-Time, 23 hours)
Location: Frimley Park Hospital – Paediatric Emergency Department

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Junior Sister/Charge Nurse to join the friendly and dynamic team in the Paediatric Emergency Department at Frimley Park Hospital.

In this role, you will support the Senior Ward Sister/Charge Nurse by leading a team of nurses and taking charge of clinical shifts in their absence. This is a vital position within a busy department that cares for nearly 30,000 children annually, aged 0–17, presenting with a wide range of conditions from minor injuries to major trauma and resuscitation needs.

You will benefit from access to a dedicated Practice Development Lead, a structured Staff Nurse Development Programme, and opportunities for both internal and external training—including emergency nurse skills, leadership development, ED specialist courses, and departmental simulation training (SIM).

Main duties of the job

Responsible for the assessment of care needs on a wide range of different paediatric conditions that present to the Emergency Department. 

On a shift-by-shift basis, co-ordinate and monitor the progress of patients along their critical pathway, reporting any variance from the pathway.

Have the ability to co-ordinate a shift as the nurse in charge being responsible for managing a team and ensuring patients receive safe care.  

Take named responsibility for co-ordinating individual patient’s discharge From the Emergency Department.

Ensure that all nursing practice within the clinical area complies with Trust Nursing policies and procedures.

To comply at all times with the NMC Code of Conduct.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post registration experience
  • Experienced as Senior Band 5 in Emergency Care
  • Experienced in supervising ED Team
  • Ability to manage complex situations, prioritise workload effectively, and implement effective solutions
Desirable criteria
  • Co-ordinator in charge course
  • Experience as a shift leader. Allocate staff appropriately to create a safe and effective skill mix

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Child Nurse Bsc or equivalent
  • Current NMC registration
  • Post registration Emergency Care module or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership course i.e yellow belt, ACLP

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Supporting learners in practice (SLIP) or equivalent mentorship course
  • Completed RCN level 1 competencies book (band 5 book)
  • Able to demonstrate communication skills both written and oral
  • Competent to clinically provide nursing care in all areas
Desirable criteria
  • Completed ESI competency or equivalent
  • Knowledge of EPR systems

Special requirements

  • PILS
