Clinical Scientist
Band 7

We are looking for a full-time, energetic, enthusiastic and well-motivated Clinical Scientist with appropriate qualifications and/or relevant experience to join the clinical team of the Infection & Immunity Sciences (I&IS) particularly Frimley Park Hospital Microbiology department for Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS).
Successful candidate must be adaptable, able to multi-task between clinical duties and supporting the senior Band 7 BMS team in managing staff and provide a high standard service to all users.
Applications are invited from HCPC registered Clinical Scientist who has completed their STP training or equivalent and has extensive experience in a specialised Microbiology laboratory setting.
You will be expected to work according to our working time compliant shift and will be required to work at between the Hub sites to maintain quality and service requirements.
You will work in rotation with other senior members of staff to manage sections of the laboratory within our team. You must be keen to embrace new ways of working and develop your knowledge and skills.

- To work alongside clinical teams to provide relevant clinical duties: authorization, lab liaison, and communication of critical results and microbiology sample processing advice.
- To support the band 7 senior biomedical scientist team, managing staff, and resources to provide a high quality and professional service to all users.
- To ensure that the Microbiology service meets the scientific and clinical needs of the Trust and hospitals affiliated with BSPS and primary care staff by providing fast, accurate, and reliable clinical microbiology results.
- To provide a comprehensive scientific and clinical interpretative service for all microbiological investigations and to ensure the efficacy, quality, and safety of the investigations.
- To provide specific expertise in one of the following: Quality facilitator, Training officer, Workload management, IT, R&D and service improvement or bench/section training, to significantly support the lab lead in that area.
- To develop an area of specialised knowledge and take responsibility for provision of teaching, scientific, and clinical services in that area, towards acting as an expert in the field.
- To provide teaching and training for more junior members of staff, both clinical and laboratory based.
- To support the verification, validation, and implementation of new equipment and methods into routine diagnostic use.

- To provide specialist analytical supervision and support in an area of special interest for investigation and management of patients.
- To perform complex analytical procedures and interpret their results independently, or as part of a team, in all areas of the microbiology department.
- As part of Clinical Scientist Duty Rota, referring to Consultant staff when necessary, the CS will advise clinical colleagues on the appropriate selection and timing of laboratory investigations, and undertake detailed interpretation, authorisation, and reporting of laboratory results to appropriate clinical teams.
- With direct supervision by the responsible duty infection consultant, advise clinicians and other healthcare workers, including senior medical staff, on the interpretation of patient results and communicate management plans. This may involve the instigation of additional tests that may be appropriate for an individual patient.
- To make judgements on, and take responsibility for, the prioritisation of work of different Consultants and ensure rapid processing of urgent samples.
- To be responsible to the Lead BMS / Consultant staff for maintaining good standards of discipline, dress, timekeeping, and behaviour of subordinate staff.
- To be responsible for maintaining and producing accurate records pertaining to work and quality control, including the recording of findings on the Laboratory Information Management Computer System. To act on any results and initiate corrective action, as necessary.
- To attend all statutory and mandatory training as and when required to do so.

- Experience and advanced knowledge of all areas of medical microbiology including bacteriology, mycology, and virology
- Experience of ISO15189 and UKAS accreditation
