Job overview

We are looking for a well-organised and compassionate individual to join our friendly Speech and Language Therapy team in an assistant role. In this role, you will support the work of our qualified therapists, helping to deliver therapy programmes for patients with communication and swallowing impairments.

We highly value our staff and offer comprehensive training and guidance to ensure you feel confident in carrying out therapy programmes under the direction of a Speech and Language Therapist. Alongside your practical skills, we appreciate strong observation, listening, and communication abilities, as well as the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.

Main duties of the job

  • Assist in delivering therapy programmes for both swallowing and communication needs.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records.
  • Support patient handovers and onward referrals.
  • Manage stock control, maintenance, and ordering of therapy resources.
  • Undertake general administrative duties to support the team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • With training and guidance from a qualified staff member, to work independently with patients, providing targeted therapy activities to address a range of communication disorders.
  • Use initiative to adapt therapy tasks regarding language processing to facilitate better participation and/or more suitable level of challenge for the patient
  • Work with the speech and language therapist to set patient goals for rehabilitation.  Set straightforward goals independently e.g. for patients with dysarthria.
  • Make and record accurate observations of the patient and document appropriately in SLT patient record.
  • With training and guidance from a qualified staff member, to work independently with patients with swallowing disorders, providing opportunities for oral trials of targeted food and fluid consistencies as part of a rehabilitation programme or checking their progress with current food/fluid recommendations.
  • Notify team about planned discharges, help to prepare the necessary paperwork and ensure the patient is discharged with a plan in place
  • Understand and maintain the required standards of clinical record keeping in line with Trust guidelines.
  • Liaise with a wide range of professional colleagues and carers at ward level to provide comprehensive management of the patient

Essential criteria
  • Good level of GCSE English
Desirable criteria
  • RCSLT level A Dysphagia competencies

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of communicating with a range of people/the public.
  • Experience of team working.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with people with communication disability.

Skills & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good interpersonal skills including observation, listening and empathy skills.
  • Collaborative team approach to working.
  • Standard keyboard and IT skills.
  • Awareness of the principles of clinical governance.
  • Awareness of the standards of record keeping.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of intervention strategies. Usually acquired through a combination of formal and informal training.
  • Proficiency with Excel.
