We have a great opportunity for the right candidate to be appointed to the role of Specialist in Anaesthesia.

The Department of Anaesthetics is a friendly and supportive one. We have achieved ACSA Accreditation from the Royal College of Anaesthetists, welcome innovation and will support change where it improves care to our patients. 

The candidate will be expected to work across both hospital sites depending on the needs of the service. The job plan will include 10 Programmed Activities  The successful candidate must be dedicated to the pursuit of excellence, always placing the patient first.

Main duties of the job

Role summary:
1. To actively engage and participate in the delivery of safe and effective Anaesthetic services within the Trust.
2. To independently cover anaesthetic sessions for trauma, #nof surgeries, renal access procedures under regional blocks, gynaecology surgery and general surgery and obstetrics
3. To independently cover weekend trauma theatre lists with a 1:6 frequency.
4. To actively participate in departmental rota management, clinical governance and quality improvement activities.
5. To actively participate in the teaching, training and supervision of anaesthetic trainees and medical students.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. To always, comply with the GMC’s guidance on ‘Good Medical Practice’ as amended or substituted from time to time.
2. To ensure that patient confidentiality is always maintained.
3. To undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan in so far as practicable and in agreement with your Clinical Director.
4. To be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director.
5. On commencement to ensure personal attendance at the Trust’s corporate Induction (or arranged Consultant Induction).
6. To participate in the Trust’s Statutory & Mandatory training programme.
7. To be responsible for the Clinical Management of in and outpatients under your care.

Person specification

Teaching Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
  • Ability to teach clinical skills
Desirable criteria
  • Meet GMC guidelines for Clinical Supervisors
  • Experience of supervising junior doctors
  • Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates/postgraduates

Research Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to contribute to change management
  • Ability to apply research findings to clinical problems
  • Ability to critically review research
Desirable criteria
  • Publications in peer review journals
  • Demonstrate involvement in Audit
  • Knowledge of NHS Clinical Governance structures

Personal Attributes

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate with patients and relatives
  • Willingness to work with consultant colleagues and management to maintain and develop a comprehensive service
Desirable criteria
  • Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities to local, regional or national levels

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Hold a medical qualification registered with the GMC
  • Completion of 10 years as SAS grade or equivalent in anaesthesia.
Desirable criteria
  • Special interest in regional anaesthesia
  • Further experience in other anaesthetic sub-specialties

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad range of experience of anaesthesia for elective, emergency surgery for patients of all ages
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced airway management skills
