Job overview
We are offering an exciting opportunity for doctors wishing to progress their career within Emergency Medicine as Specialty Doctors.
There will ample opportunity to develop skills in managing a wide range of clinical presentations as well as management opportunities that will allow post holders to apply for Specialty Training or submit a CESR application.
Emergency Medicine is at the heart of each hospital’s emergency care pathway and provides innovative and high-quality care for patients from the moment they arrive at the hospital. It is a consultant led service with Consultants providing leadership and patient care on the ‘shop floor’ 08:00 – 22.45 7 days a week. There is a strong commitment to ensure the ED is appropriately resourced to deliver high quality and timely emergency care. The trust has been and continues to be very supportive of the developments that are taking place to address the pressures resulting from increased emergency admissions and a greater acuity of cases which present. We remain an ED who continues to perform well against the 4hr target and score highly in the Friends and Family Test.
The ED has excellent links to in patient specialties working collaboratively to enhance patient care and to develop innovative patient pathways.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be fully involved in all aspects of the work of the department under the supervision of the consultants and will attend to the initial assessment and treatment of the patients attending the department across the spectrum of Emergency Medicine.
South West London Acute.
They will be joining a team of 17 Consultants and 26 Specialty Doctors/ST4+ crosssite.
The Consultant team have a wealth of experience in all aspect of Emergency Medicine with additional areas of specialist interest such as Paediatric EM, Research, USS, Trauma, Pre-Hospital, Simulation and Education.
Working Pattern
The SpDrs work an attractive self-roster rota covering 24hrs which
allows everyone to balance their working lives with other
responsibilities and interests. Up to 10 PAs are offered. There is
protected SPA time.
Working for our organisation
St Helier Hospital is home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children, while Epsom Hospital is home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). Both Epsom and St Helier hospitals have Accident and Emergency departments (A&E) and Maternity services (Obstetrics).
We also play an active role in the local healthcare economy, and are the lead provider in two innovative health and care partnerships.
We have partnered with CSH Surrey, the three GP federations in the Surrey Downs area, and Surrey Council (who are an associate member), to provide adult community health services. This innovative partnership is called Surrey Downs Health and Care.
In Sutton, we have joined forces with the London Borough of Sutton, Sutton GP Services and South West London and St George’s Mental Health Trust to provide adult and children’s community health services and sexual health services to local people. Together, we are called Sutton Health and Care.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Main Responsibilities and Duties
1. The principal duty of this post is to provide a comprehensive clinical service to
patients.
2. To at all times, comply with the GMC’s guidance on ‘Good Medical Practice’ as
amended or substituted from time to time.
3. To ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.
4. To undertake duties as defined within the attached job plan in so far as practicable and in agreement with your Clinical Director.
5. To be responsible and managerially accountable for the reasonable and effective use of Trust resources that you use and influence, and professionally accountable to the Medical Director.
6.. On commencement to ensure personal attendance at the Trust’s corporate Induction (or arranged Consultant Induction).
7. To participate in the Trust’s Statutory & Mandatory training programme.
8. To be responsible for the Clinical Management of inpatients and outpatients under
your care.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- MRCEM Pass
- ALS certificate
- ATLS/ETC
Desirable criteria
- FRCEM

Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Must have minimum of 4 years post-registration experience with at least 2 years of Emergency Department experience at ST1 level or higher (senior doctor, in charge at night)
- Must have minimum one year experience of working within the NHS as a Tier 4 EPIC at night
Teaching/research&Clinical Gov
Essential criteria
- Understanding of clinical governance and participation in audit
- Commitment to continuing medical education
Desirable criteria
- Experience of teaching undergraduates
- Experience in research
- Presentations at postgraduate meetings
