Main duties of the job
This post has been advertised following a recent retirement in the Maxillofacial Surgery department. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake the core responsibilities of a Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon.
The Consultant Group is strongly committed to multidisciplinary team working, benefiting both patients and trainees. This approach is already embedded in several services, including established joint orthognathic clinics and multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings with consultants from outside the region. These collaborative services bring together clinicians from Oral Surgery, Orthodontics, ENT, and other specialties. The new postholder will be encouraged to further develop and expand multidisciplinary working in their area of special interest.
As a senior employee of the Trust you will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Trust’s patients. Integral to these responsibilities are the following:
- The provision of a first class clinical service
- Effective leadership, where appropriate to all staff engaged in the specialty
- Undertaking all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies
- Conducting clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s service plans

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To share in the overall workload of Maxillofacial Referrals in and out of region. Together with the other clinical colleagues to provide a service for patients referred to the Maxillofacial Department. This will includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department.
- Flexible cover for the clinical commitments of the department.
- Promotion of (and participation in) teaching within the department.
- Shared responsibility with the other clinical colleagues to provide a comprehensive service for patient referred to the Maxillofacial Department. The day to day working arrangements will need to take account of the need to cover colleague’s periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
- Contribute to continuing oral and maxillofacial surgery education and clinical governance initiatives.
- Responsible for out-patient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed by the management team.
- To contribute to departmental research interests in accordance with the Trust’s R&D framework.
- To contribute to the Audit Program.
- To take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Division’s Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.
- To conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for Oral & Maxillofacial services.
- To exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
- To work in conjunction with clinical and professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for junior colleagues.
- To undertake management duties as agreed with the Divisional Manager/Clinical Director.
- To be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene. To undertake annual training/updates in infection prevention and control.
- To be accountable for implementation of the Code of Practice within own department/area of responsibility.
- To prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence based practice and maintaining patient safety.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- On the GMC Specialist Register in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery or within 6 months of eligibility for inclusion. Ιntercollegiate Fellowship Examination in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, or equivalent. Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, or equivalent. Fellowship or Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons, or equivalent. Full Registration with the United Kingdom GMC and GDC.
Desirable criteria
- Possession of a Certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CCST in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Current ATLS provider certificate • ATLS trainer status • BSc • MSc • MDMS • MDS
Experience & ability
Essential criteria
- Successful completion of an SAC approved 5 year minimum training programme in Oral & Maxillofaical Surgery, or within 3 months of completion. Applicants who are Nationals from another European country or elsewhere overseas would have to show equivalence to the 5 year training period in the NHS required for the specialty. Current holders of an NHS or Honorary NHS Consultant contract in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery are eligible to be shortlisted. Extensive experience in all aspects of Maxillofacial Surgery including particular emphasis on facial deformity/trauma/TMJ. Motivated to ensure the achievement of defined targets. Up to date ATLS Demonstrate commitment and ability to teach and train undergraduates, junior doctors, nurses and other staff groups. Effective participation in clinic audit.
Teaching
Essential criteria
- Commitment to organise education and training of junior doctors, therapy staff, nurses and medical students
Desirable criteria
- Qualification in teaching or completion of a ‘Teach the Trainers’ course
Management
Essential criteria
- Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload • Evidence of previous active participation in leadership and management activities • Understanding of NHS policy and delivery of national performance targets (including hospital acquired infections) • Flexible, pragmatic and a problem solving approach. • Ability to inspire and motivate others
