Job overview
We are looking for someone with proven clinical skills, initiative and excellent communication skills to join our team to provide a high quality specialist service to intensive care and support the surgical care of our patients.
You will spend a considerable portion of the day on ICU, working closely with the multidisciplinary team, attending the multidisciplinary ward round and providing pharmacy support and advice. You will also be involved in the development of Trustwide treatment guidelines and protocols, divisional reporting, clinical audit, risk management and multi-professional teaching. You will represent pharmacy in the adult nutrition team and provide cover when required for paediatric and neonatal PN.
As the 8a for critical care, based at St Helier, you will line manage the Band 7 rotational pharmacists HDU/surgical (based at Epsom hospital) and the pharmacy team supporting critical care and surgery on both sites. You will work closely with the Lead Pharmacist Planned and Critical Care to lead on dissemination of critical care and surgical issues across the Trust.
The post includes participation in the late duty, weekend, bank holiday and on-call (EDC) rotas.
Main duties of the job
- To provide a specialist clinical pharmacy service to designated wards in conjunction with other clinical and junior pharmacists.
- To provide advice and day to day clinical supervision for the pharmacy team working in Critical Care and Surgery promoting evidence-based, cost-effective use of medicines
- To promote safe, responsible, cost effective prescribing and usage of medicines, in line with the formulary, to optimise clinical outcomes and minimise adverse reactions and errors.
- To lead and manage other pharmacy staff working in the Critical Care and Surgery team to ensure service delivery to agreed standards in line with business planning requirements.
- To liaise with appropriate MDT colleagues to ensure the implementation of National/Local guidelines related to medicines to optimise patient care and promote best practice.
- To work with senior pharmacy management team to monitor and evaluate medicines expenditure across the Trust, identifying and putting plans in place to address cost pressures and Cost Improvement Plan

Essential criteria
- Masters in Pharmacy Degree – MPharm
- 1 year pre-registration training Professional registration with General Pharmaceutical Council
- Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Membership of Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain
- Member of the faculty of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (or working towards) at Faculty Advanced Stage II or Advanced level practice against the Core Advanced Curriculum
- Independent Prescriber
- Leadership/management qualification
Experience & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Extensive post registration hospital experience at least Band 7 level
- Significant and relevant clinical experience working in areas linked to Critical Care
- Demonstrates evidence of excellent clinical knowledge and skills
- Understanding of current national standards, guidelines and service developments linked to Critical Care and Surgery.
- Experience of developing and leading on projects including change management and service development
- Experience of Parenteral Nutrition
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of CMM (formerly JAC) pharmacy computer system
- Risk management and assessment
- Procedure and business plan writing
- An understanding of how digital tools / EPR functionality can improve clinical practice in the hospital setting
