Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity to join our dietetic team at Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, as a Band 6 Specialist Gastroenterology Dietitian on a fixed term contract.  The successful candidate will join the Gastroenterology Dietetic team and be involved in delivering specialist inpatient and outpatient services to our patients. We are looking for an enthusiastic, innovative, and flexible Dietitian, with a desire to develop and grow their clinical skills, knowledge and experience.  The successful candidate will bring a strong foundation of clinical dietetic skills and will be well supported to further develop these skills within the specialism of Gastroenterology.

We are looking for an individual who is keen to explore new ways of working within an ever-changing NHS, whilst remaining committed to delivering high quality patient care and promoting the dietetic profession within the Trust.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work as part of a dynamic team of 6 gastroenterology dietitians and a dietetic support worker, responsible for providing specialist nutritional care and managing a caseload of inpatients on the gastroenterology ward. 

This post has a strong outpatient focus, providing a specialist dietetic service for patients with a range of gastrointestinal conditions including IBS, coeliac disease, liver disease and inflammatory bowel disease.   You will be involved in delivering face to face, telephone and virtual appointments as well as group education sessions.  This post also includes regular attendance at MDT meetings.  

In addition to clinical duties, the post holder will have the opportunity to support the development of staff and students through supervision, actively contribute to service improvement and audit initiatives, and participate in the development and implementation of innovative working practices.

Team working, excellent communication skills and an ability to work under your own initiative are essential.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will: 

  • As part of the Ashford and St Peter’s Dietetic Department provide a high quality nutrition and dietetic service to patients, carers and staff at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals
  • Undertake nutritional assessments and treatment of patients admitted to the acute adult Gastroenterology ward at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals, including oral and enteral nutrition support
  • Undertake nutritional assessment of and treatment of Gastroenterology outpatients with a range of gastrointestinal conditions including IBS, coeliac disease, liver disease and inflammatory bowel disease.   

·         Deliver face to face, telephone and virtual appointments as well as group education sessions. 

  • Work as an autonomous practitioner to undertake a significant specialist clinical caseload, working without direct supervision.  
  • Take a role in supervision and teaching and provide day-to day support to junior dietetic staff within the team and participate in multi-disciplinary team teaching. 
  • Contribute to service development, quality improvement projects, audits and developing multidisciplinary management of patients.
  • Liaise with all members of the Gastroenterology MDT, including attendance at MDT meetings
  • To take an active role in the general functioning of the Dietetic department, including contributing to student training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • General experience of inpatient dietetics within the NHS
  • Specific experience of managing gastroenterology patients
  • Experience in oral and enteral nutrition support practices
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working
  • Experience of delivering outpatient clinics and group education sessions
  • Working as part of a team
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of student supervision
  • Experience of conducting audits or service evaluation
  • Experience of initiating and managing patients on home enteral feeds
  • Experience of line managing junior staff

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Specialist knowledge of nutrition support
  • Knowledge of specialist dietary interventions used within gastroenterology
  • Evidence of CPD
