We have an exciting opportunity to join our dietetic team at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as a Specialist Oncology Dietitian (1.0wte Band 7, 24 month fixed term). This newly created post offers an exciting opportunity to lead and develop a highly specialised nutrition and dietetic service for oncology patients across North West Surrey. While primarily focused on outpatient care, the role also supports oncology inpatients, providing support to patients throughout their oncology pathway. 

You will work closely with multidisciplinary teams at Ashford and St Peter's and collaborate with local dietetic and oncology teams. This role offers the chance to contribute to service development, innovation and deliver expert nutritional care to patients undergoing cancer treatment at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals. Main duties of the job

The post will take the lead in establishing this service and implement support to cancer patients across site and the Trust, delivering excellent care to this nutritionally vulnerable patient group. This role offers the chance to shape services, contribute to research, and develop professionally in a supportive environment. The postholder will be expected to participate in the following:

 

·        Lead in the development of a highly specialised nutrition and dietetics service for oncology patients at Ashford and St Peter’s for their treatment and/or palliative care.

·        Joint working with Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust – the regional cancer specialist centre and as part of the group model will be expected 

·        To participate in data collection to measure activity and outcomes to support proof of concept 

·        Work autonomously as the lead clinical specialists in the development and provision of a comprehensive nutrition and dietetic service to ASPH outpatient services and to other areas as and when required in response to service needs.

·        To liaise with all members of the Oncology MDT. This includes attendance at MDT meetings and any other relevant meetings.

The Trust is moving towards 7 day working and this post may be expected to participate in providing the Dietetic service across 7 days, including extended hours and weekend working

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will actively manage a caseload of patients dependent on their clinical rotation. They will interpret complex patient data to provide high quality, safe and effective nutritional advice.

The post holder will us advanced highly specialist dietetic skills and knowledge to asses, plan and implement treatment and deliver dietetic interventions to oncology patients in an outpatient and inpatient setting across North West Surrey. You will work autonomously and independently to develop an oncology dietetic service to patients of North West Surrey.

You will be expected to undertake clinical research and maintain data relating to the development and monitoring of the oncology dietetics service. Results of this research, audit and report writing should be submitted for presentation or publication to appropriate conferences, meetings and journals.

Person specification

Qualifications and Further Training

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Dietetics (or equivalent qualification)
  • Current registration with HCPC
  • Evidence of relevant post registration training relevant to clinical speciality
  • Extensive post graduate training to Masters level or equivalent experience in practice at masters level
  • Student supervisory skills course
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching on degree (or higher level) / professional course
  • Membership of BDA

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post registration dietetic experience in managing patients in the oncology and palliative care setting
  • Demonstrate advanced highly specialist skills within dietetics and oncology
  • Experience working at a senior level in an acute setting within the NHS environment
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working and with partner organisations
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership when introducing change.
  • Experience of conducting audits and/ or research
  • Experience of collecting performance data, to analyse and develop services.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with a diverse range of stakeholders

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to evidence a sound understanding of the NHS principles and values.
  • Understanding of clinical governance
  • Sound clinical knowledge

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously
