Deputy Charge Nurse Specialising in Resus

Job overview
The post holder will provide support and at times, leadership in the Resuscitation room undertaking the role of the Resuscitation room supervisor. You will provide specialist emergency nursing advice to co-workers and juniors working throughout the department. The role is to work primarily, but not exclusively, in the resuscitation area .
You will support and lead staff to ensure high quality care is delivered to those attending the department. The role carries continuing responsibility for the supervision of junior staff throughout the department, as delegated by the Senior charge nurses within Emergency Services, together with the provision of a twenty-four-hour expert emergency nurse service.
The role includes working closely and effectively with the multi-disciplinary team in the management of the Emergency Department Resuscitation room. This would be led primarily by Band 7 resus lead and band 7 resus CPE
This includes the support and leadership provided to nursing and support staff within the Emergency Department and across the Emergency Floor. The role also includes the continuing support for the effective delivery of the philosophy, policies, and standards of care and morale of the department in line with the Trust values –PPPP.
Main duties of the job
As the senior Emergency Care Nurse, in resus, you will be responsible for the daily operational management and service delivery process within the Resuscitation room along with the line management of a nursing team, working closely with the MDT.
You will be competent and confident in advanced skills or be willing to take on advanced skills and further training.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To demonstrate specialist emergency care and major trauma expertise underpinned by theory and incorporating evidence-based practice, evidenced by completion of appropriate competencies
To take responsibility of the accurate assimilation, interpretation and reporting of clinical data in relation to emergency care patients and take appropriate action
To review and modify planned interventions in response to the needs of emergency care patients, seeking advice where required
To order appropriate diagnostic investigations, laboratory tests, to assist in managing episodes of care
To provide supervision for the multidisciplinary team in the resuscitation area to ensure a high standard of patient care, providing support as required
To act as a role model of expert clinical practice.
To ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to a high standard. Be a competent user of and participate in the ongoing development of the Electronic Patient Record.
To work in close liaison with other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
To participate in quality and audit initiatives within the department.
To use clinical expertise and skills to accurately assess patient’s individual needs managing clinical priorities appropriately.
To co-ordinate and supervise the management and planning of nursing care within the department when undertaking clinical shifts.
Maintain a safe and acceptable environment for patients, visitors, students and staff, reporting and taking appropriate action on any hazards, incidents, faulty equipment or inadequate standards of cleaning. Coordinate the reporting of all such incidents for the area in liaison with Band 7 and Matrons
To ensure that all patients who use the emergency department service do so in a timely manner ensuring equality, privacy and dignity needs are met. Communicate proactively with the patients and their relatives.
To challenge practice so that the best and most appropriate treatment is given to the patient, maintaining and monitoring high standards of care, recognising and responding proactively to patients’ changing clinical needs.
Ensure a visible presence in clinical areas of responsibility regularly, to ensure accessibility and visibility for staff and patients
To act within the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Conduct.
To practice safe prescribing of medicines where appropriate and as per agreed scope of practice, and act in accordance with the hospital non-medical prescribing policy subsequent to appropriate competencies.
To work closely with the Band 7, Matrons and Clinical Lead, so that the vision and goals of the Resuscitation room and whole emergency department are translated into practice.
To work with the Band 7 and CPE, to proactively identify areas for improving nursing practice and service delivery.
To work with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure key performance clinical indicators for the Resuscitation room are achieved.
To be responsible for the efficient management, storage and use of all stock including equipment in conjunction with the MDT.
To support the division to monitor and implement the performance targets for the department.
Attend department and working parties as required and support with the development of any department policies and procedures ensuring that they are disseminated to all staff.
Knows his/her responsibilities within policies pertaining to Major Incident, CBRNE and other emergency bleep responses. Help other staff to be aware of their duties within these policies.
Is actively involved in supporting change within the department.
Report and record all untoward incidents informing the senior team as required. Help update policies as requested and help initiate new innovations.
Contribute to the achievement of financial targets ensuring best value for money in all aspects of service provision, e.g. staffing, stock etc.
Carry out procedures within the Trust policies and ensure that these are adhered to.
Be involved in Audit and Quality in the department.
Demonstrate a high degree of motivation and innovation.
Chair meetings for junior staff in your area and provide minutes and action plans.
Governance
Continue to develop own advanced clinical expertise and skills within the Scope of Practice framework and as agreed by the senior CPE and matron team.
Adhere to all clinical governance and risk management policies and principles, i.e. incident reporting management, reviewing trends & department risk register.
Remain acquainted with clinical and professional development in nursing and attend relevant study sessions as appropriate.
Be actively involved in supporting new policies, procures and guidelines.
Have regular appraisal from the band 7 .
Adhere to all Trust Policies and Health & Safety, as applicable.
Identify own training and development needs (in conjunction with the Band 7 and CPE) and undertake appropriate training/education as required, supported by regular PDP.
To attend monthly senior nurse / sisters meeting for the emergency floor
